Kitchens Design Dilemma

Portrush and torquay in kitchen

Hi
I’m renovating my kitchen and would like advice on a cambria color that will compliment Portrush.

I decided on Portrush to use on the navy blue island but can’t decide on a complimentary color for the countertops and backsplash.

The backsplash will go up the wall past the range venthood. I think Portrush would be too much all over counters and backsplash so I am limiting it to the island.

I am considering torquay for the countertops and backsplash. Would love ideas!

I would do Portrush for all counters and possibly the backsplash. If you think it would be too much for the BS you could always doing something else. We decided on Southport (we are still months away) and I keep thinking about Portrush. Whatever you do, please post pictures!

Sorry...I have no advice. But I love Portrush! It is gorgeous in person. We considered it, but we had just completed our master bath reno and did blue in there. What color are your perimeter cabinets? Most pros suggest one color for the counters if you have two cabinet colors. Also, check out posts on here about quartz as a backsplash behind a range. Some have ended up with scorch marks on their quartz. Just be sure to read and reread the specs of your range/cooktop. Oh and be sure you approve the template for the layout of your counters prior to them being cut. If your fabricator doesn't do this, then find another fabricator. Good luck with your project!

Nothing with a pattern will work. Lok at Hadley, and match your blue island to it.

Lien laws vary by state, but my general rule is that you should not give final payment to the GC until he provides you with signed lien release forms from all subs, precisely because the subs can file liens against your house even if you pay the GC in full but he fails to pay the subs. You contracted with the kitchen company, and they hired the sub that did the faulty work, so the kitchen company is ultimately responsible for the quality of the work. Assuming you have not already paid the kitchen company in full for whatever you owe them, I would inform them that you are withholding payment in an amount equal to the full cost of the counters until they provide you with a signed lien release from their sub (it is between them and the fabricator what financial arrangement they come to to get the release signed) as well as properly installed counters. In other words, don't pay until you get exactly what you are paying for plus a lien release from everyone.

I have Cambria Torquay in my kitchen. It is so beautiful & I could not be happier with it. I too had a terrible time getting my kitchen design place to get a sample so I finally ordered a sample directly from Cambria & it came in a couple of days. Cambria shipped it out the day after I ordered it. It seems that Cambria subcontracts out the job of supplying kitchen design places with the samples & the subcontractors do a really poor job of supplying samples. Cambria themselves were super fast. I had gotten so discouraged waiting for the kitchen design place to get samples that I also ordered samples from Silestone (Lyra & Lagoon) in case I wanted to give up on Cambria. I liked Cambria's Torquay so much better. Torquay's white is whiter instead of being just shades of gray or slightly muddy. It is a very serene design to me. If you have any doubts about what you want and you cannot find a sample, just order a sample. The cost is nothing when you compare living with a countertop pretty much forever. BTW, Cambria's samples are 12"X12" so you get a really good picture of what it is like, not like looking at a 1" square!

One of the things we learned about grays (and I'm sure whites) is that it's all about the light in the room you're painting. In our old house we painted the north facing LR BM Silver Lake (a blue undertone). It was so great we thought we'd do it in a south facing bedroom. Horrible! For the new house we must have 6 sample cans of grays, none of which are the grays we used in the old house. Take these suggestions, but be sure to paint up (large) samples in your kitchen. You'll never know until you try the colors in your lighting. If you want to do this now, it's all good. The cabinets, etc. will change, but the lighting will only change from winter sun to spring sun.

The Cambria web site suggests complementary quartz. In your case, it recommends Malvern, Mayfair or Hadley.

I'd go for a solid white counter for the perimeter. Make sure it works with both the Portrush and your white paint for the cabinets.

Thanks cambria, malvern seems like a really good option too. I haven’t seen a two tone kitchen with two different counter tops which I think is the challenge. Our island will be navy and other cabinets will be white

Thank you Sabrina Alfin, I did think about white as well. Dilemma there was the expense and not getting more of a statement design but it could be the safe way to go. Thank you!

Your choice is too stunning to only use in your island. What about using this on the perimeter and something plain on the island? That design is a knockout. I don’t think it will be too much. A plain white backsplash tile will look great with it.

Your other choice has to be very “quiet” - probably no pattern at all.

We used it on both the island and the perimeter. That helped to tie the blue and white cabinets together. We then used white handmade look subway tile for the backsplash. Looks great
