What happens when DH gets a new TV and streams for the first time

As many of you know we finally got fiber optic internet connection. Which meant we needed a new TV so DH bought a smart TV. I'm not much of a tv watcher, so I let him be in charge. Last Sunday, after the geek guy installed the new tv & hooked it up to the sound system, I didn't see DH for what seemed like days. lol He's a huge history buff and he's in awe of how many movies and series he's missed all these years because of worthless DTV.

DH behaves like Santa arrived each day. I'm not complaining, I love watching him so happy.

Yesterday afternoon I walked into the LR and he said, "I moved some things around so I could see the TV better." I said it's fine, I'll clean and tweak a few things without moving the chair and sofa.

Oh brother. Where do I begin? I'm too embarrassed to show you the area in front of the tv because the coffee table is placed in front of the sofa with the end of it in front of the striped chair. That's Lobo sticking his head out. In front of his chair which has the flowered blanket on top, is the leather ottoman. My new rug can barely be seen.

See if you can find where he put the surge protector which plugs in on the floor behind it. Oh yes, see how the sofa table is crammed against everything? :)

Oakley that's really funny but I love the way you are taking a deep breath and going with it. The initial fascination will hopefully war off a bit and you can ease him back into a more 'traditional' layout!

Bill, you sure have a lot of chicken predators there! I lock mine up too, but that night I was a bit late in getting them in and they roosted up in the orange tree. The raccoons snatched them off the tree. Yes, raccoons kill chickens. It's gross, but they cut off the heads and leave the rest behind. Two were found in my neighbors backyard, and I haven't found the third one, but there was evidence all over the place that it was also killed. You would think that it would be cheaper to build a coop than to keep replacing chickens! We have horses and chickens in the next block over, but assume they are illegal, yet, it so nice to see them. I had my one foot tall Dorthea brug give me another bloom! I brought it in the house to admire. My DD and GD came to visit, and next thing I see my 4 y.o. GD with the bloom in a basket! Oh well, there's next year for more blooms.

What's The First Thing To Do When You Get Keys To New House....?

In no particular order: 1) Change all the locks to use a single key and have extra keys made. 2) Measure all of the rooms and draw a plan of each room. Note where the electrical outlets are in each room. Measure the windows and doorways. 3) Figure out where all of your furniture will go before you move it and draw up a plan. Mark your boxes and furniture with the name of the room where they will go. 4) If you have the time and $$, refinish the floors, steam-clean the carpets, and paint if needed -- so much easier to do if the rooms are empty. 5) Take photos. (I wish I'd done this!) 6) If you're not changing the paint, ask the PO what paints were used where. (If you're lucky, the PO will leave the marked cans for you.) 7) Ask the PO for a list of plants, trees, and shrubs and any special care requirements, especially if you're not a gardener or if you're moving to a different climate. Something that looks like a weed in May could turn out to be a beautiful flowering plant in September. 8) Ask the previous owner for a list of service people (septic cleanout, electrician, plumber, snow removal, lawn service, pest control, etc.) that they used. It will be a good starting point. 9) Fill out the change of address form at the Post Office. Find out where the breaker box, gas, and water shutoffs are. Find out if there's a Newcomers Club (or similar) in your new town. Mine was a terrific resource for meeting people and finding out about all sorts of things I never would have known. Stock up on toilet paper and cleaning supplies and a couple of waster baskets. Clean! Even if the PO hired a cleaning service, it probably won't be as clean as you like. Besides, there's something really disgusting about OTHER people's dirt. Get doormats before the movers come. Put down rosin paper for the movers in the hallways, etc. Call the town hall to find out when trash and recycling pickup is (if your town provides that service) and what the rules are. If your town requires you to use special bags for trash, stock up. My town provides recycle bins. Get your trash barrels and recycling bins BEFORE you move because you'll have a lot of packing materials and other stuff to get rid of after you move. (You can also give away packing materials on Craig's List or Freecycle.) Arrange for the utilities and to keep your current phone number (if that applies). Make sure that the house number is visible!

My armoire has the retracting doors that disappear, and I do close them when we have company or a party. But it's a fact of life that everyone has a t.v. And for families that have it on when they are at home, there's not much point in pretending otherwise. If you can get something where the doors retract, it might make sense, so you could have the look you love when you have your friends over or host a party. But if the doors are going to be flying open and closed every day, someone will break them eventually. Go for the open look. Red

pillog, I hear ya about the real political candidates. Fools, bullies, and jerks. Not all, but seriously, is this the best we can do? I agree that Alicia is no worse by a long shot, but really, besides being the real power (and charisma) between her and Peter, she's just a very beautiful face. Those early years were fantastic when she was recovering from Peter's betrayals and coming up through the ranks of Lockhart/Gardner. And Will. My friend thought he was a rat, but I loved him. So did Alicia. And now that she's risen to the top and beyond, what's left that's plausible? The quirky judges and courtroom scenes are fun, but the drama's gone. It happened to The West Wing and I hate to see it happening here. Although that new guy, the one who took Kalinda's place, is really cute.

Carol, did you make a woman cave in the bedroom? :) The tv is a good size but a tad smaller than our old one which is "stored" leaning against the guest bedroom bed. Perfect condition.

I've tweaked a tiny bit. Found an empty surge protector plugged into the other surge protector. 😁 So far I've been able to scoot the sofa table back a few inches & he hasn't noticed. A bit at a time.

I guess his office work is finished, he's now snuggled on the sofa watching goodness knows what. Dogs lost their seat. He put all the cat beds in the back of the room and it doesn't bother them. I'll be tweaking those too.

This was a constant, although not contensious battle in our home. DH's idea of "comfy and homey" is my idea of a cross between a sports bar and a man cave. Thankfully when our kids moved out, I told him the rec room downstairs is all yours - go crazy. He bought a giant TV with surround sound and there are now 3 (yes 3!) recliners down there. Out of sight, out of mind and he's happy.

I'm all for having man caves, but I would not do that in the living room.

He's worked hard and had a tough fight recently. Why didn't he get a big TV? Maybe if he knew how much fun it was going to be he would have lobbied for a bigger one? 😜

Lars, a little tweaking from me will do the trick. Trust me on that. I'm a Virgo, we don't ignore imperfection. ;)

RN, you're right, he's been through several tough fights lately and as we get older while living in the country, people don't just drop by without calling like they used to.

Now's a good time to mop the wood floors in the back of the room. Yay.

That is so cute! It was so nice that he reorganized everything without bothering you about it. How sweet. (there might be a touch of sarcasm in there)

We needed a new TV and I told DH to take care of it. Well, he brought home a 60" behemoth. We are building a new home and now we have to find a place for this thing and no! it is NOT going above the fireplace which he thought was the perfect spot for it.

Our place has suffered for the past few years after raising two consecutive Australian Shepherd pups and not needing to worry about houseguests because of Covid. My DH sent me this cartoon today

But he doesn't know that things are about to change because I can't take it anymore...I might be back for some moral support.

And my 'cave' is our spare bedroom/office/craft room, where I'm sitting right now 🙂

P.S. Hubby also uses our LR bookshelves as a catchall for his personal belongings 🙄

Seagrass, that gave me a good laugh! Actually, this gives me something decorative to do. I've been wanting to rearrange forever but with the tv permanently in its place, it's been hard.

So now I have a sofa table with no sofa in front. Maybe I should build a wall dividing the room? ;)

ETA: I've been trying to teach DH the meaning of aesthetics, but he just doesn't get it.

We started streaming 4 years ago...and there really are so many GREAT things to watch. Your husband is probably in scenic heaven! It's an awesome experience to watch anything...any time!

I'm ALL for re-decorating....new furniture...or plusher furniture....right!

Nicole, with my two horses there is no way I'll buy plusher furniture. We had the best sofa ever, which was extra long, 3 cushions, and a great depth, until the dogs arrived. I'll replace the two striped chairs when they cross the bridge.

DH was gone this morning and first thing I did was take a good look in the front part of the LR, and I just started laughing & walked away.

You streamed before with a Roku. Are you finding this different? We have only streamed using a smart tv.

Tina, we bought the Roku about 12 years ago not knowing our internet wasn't fast enough to stream. It got put in a closet somewhere.

While cleaning this morning I wanted to change channels to a different local station. I couldn't figure it out. I haven't learned how to use the tv let alone the smart part. :)

Thank you 3Katz. After watching him go through 3 life threatening illnesses since 2017...which two are still there but he's doing great, watching him smile all the time which makes me smile, it's worth it. One illness can take him at any time just out of the blue with no warning. Let him play all he wants, right?
