When do you get a 'new' car - or, when do you call it quits?
Comments (13)Thanks everyone for your insights. Over the last 29 years, between DH & I, we've had 10 Fords. Every one has lasted 10+ years and the lowest mileage one we had when traded was 135,000. I think this 2002 Taurus is just a "dud" but I've had 3 other Taurus' since 1986 & had excellent records. I had a 1989 Ford Explorer that ran over 200K miles & 13 years. I sold it for $2,000 when I bought the current Taurus and some college kid is probably still delivering pizzas in it! And the love of my life was my 1983 red Thunderbird - DH and I traded it back and forth for 13 years, until our 2nd son was born and the back seat was way too small for 2 car seats. My mechanic gave me a good insight on the "gas guzzler" Crown Vic when I discussed with him what he would buy if he were looking for a used car and had less than $10K to spend. He said he'd go for a full size sedan becuase they still get around 20 mpg, and cost around &8 to $10K. If I kept the car for 6 years, and gas even went back to $4 a gallon, I'd still spend way less total than buying a small car for $14K or more. Plus with 3 unusually tall boys, a small car just won't fit us. He said his top pic for a used sedan would be a Nissan Maxima but it's just not big enough for us. I am very hard on cars - I only live 3 miles from work and most days drive 10 miles or less of 'stop at every corner' type driving. That's really hard on a car, so if my Fords have lasted 135,000 or miles or more, it's like double that in highway miles. I will most likely buy another Ford, mostly because of my good experience up to now, and also because Ford is in better financial condition and will be around to honor any warranty. I know intellectually that I should get rid of this car before it blows, but emotionally I'm just not sure I am ready to spend the $$ on a "new" car. Every time I say I'm going to look at cars, I come up with an excuse not to. I just took 2 weeks off work and had several days with no plans, but never managed to make it to look at cars. I live right in the city & near a major business corridor with 5 or 6 dealerships in a 5 mile stretch, but still can't seem to make it over there!...See Morewhat are the top 5 things you look for when buying a house?
Comments (61)Some of this seems to be dependent upon age/stage of life. As empty nesters/business owners who travel a bit, love new/great restaurants, wonderful live music/entertainment/awesome movie houses that serve dinner/drinks as we watch- this was it for our latest: 1. Location. We are 1.5 miles away from downtown Austin TX straight in front, a few blocks from the SoCo enterntaiment area (to the right) and the SoLa restaurant area, Zilker Park (music festivals) four blocks to the left. We also live on a street that is nearly completely isolated. Almost NO traffic, save for us on the short street, Very, very quiet. And? We wanted a custom, ground-up build. A neighborhood where this is happening, that we just did. 2. Low crime- Eh? We have a bit of crime of opportunity, in this City neighborhood, but are also very protected by 1) being very aware 2) having a security system wired into local law enforcement/fire/EMT that is nearly impenetrable. 3. Great neighbors, mis of people. Our neighborhood has "OGs" who have been here for 50+ years (mostly Mexican, in ethnicity) others who have been steadily moving in within 30, 20, 10 and 5 years. LOVE this place- enough children around so as not to be weird, but mostly just grown ups who want to live quietly. 4. Proximity to airport, for business travel, Quite literally, 10-12 minutes away, door to door. FANTASTIC for the days of "day trips". 5. A view Both my architect and contractor were a bit skeptical of this, but I KNEW it was there. Today, we can see- end to end- Austin Texas downtown skyline from inside second story. Schools? Eh? Our very expensive property taxes are spread locally AS WELL AS through out other areas of TX. For the first time in my adult life, I ignored schools in favor of all else I wanted. And in case you think this is a"bad resale" idea? You're nuts. 1-5 in our city center are at-home professionals who travel, want close proximity to city (but still quiet) want all the easy access to restaurants/live entertainment, in quiet and Google Fiber etc? If I were smart, I'd run to the Google campus today, sell tomorrow :)...See MoreSo what metal things do I need to get for my new tub/shower install?
Comments (2)Delta is a good moderately priced line. Both Moen and Delta make excellent products for the money. You should select the valves you want in terms of style and then tell your plumber what you have selected. He will then be responsible for ordering all the correct components and ensuring they are not defective and are there when he is scheduled to do the work. I just finished a remodel and I made the design decisions and then left the purchasing up to my the professionals. In other words, you shouldn't be doing the shopping but should go to a good plumbing store to look at styles in person and then tell your plumber what styles you want....See Moream getting new gutters and painting my house. what should I do first?
Comments (2)It would be best if you could have the old gutters removed, then paint the house, then have the new gutters installed. This would allow the fascia to be painted the new trim color and the walls to be painted without the downspouts in the way. Replacing any deteriorated trim would also be made easier....See Moremom2five-home
