New kitchen sink before or after new countertop?

We will be replacing our old laminate countertops with a new Wilsonart laminate and installing a subway tile backsplash as well. We will also be changing out our old 22 year old 25" white sink for a new stainless steel 25" Kohler sink. I was just wondering if it matters if we opt to change out the sink with our own plumber in advance just to be sure we like it first before doing the counters Or is it better to have the countertop guys send in their own plumber to do it.

if you mean install / then un install / then install again I wouldnt do that. what do you mean by "be sure we like it? " take some time and look at specs of all the sinks in the type you wish to get ...choose specifics to meet your needs...... gauge/dimensions/ reveal/ or lip surround if top mount / # of bowls/ faucet particulars and placement etc....... plumber to install it when counter is done. In my opinion if this is a top mount sink.......getting the faucet selected..... [height / extension and type of sprayer/style and working of handle/ and how many holes and where you decide is best for faucet positioning ] is as difficult as the sink choices . go to some plumbing websites..pick what you want..your plumber can get at his pricing so you dont have to pay full retail. once you spend some time looking things over you should feel confident and not have to be so undecided like you describe. yes there is a lot of product out there....

Lol. This post is from 2006 and I'm still getting notifications of replies to it. We replaced our counter tops with the inexpensive Formica at Lowe's about 5 years ago now. We had a water leak at the kitchen sink which caused some damage that we wanted to fix so while we were ripping things out we decided to replace the counter tops. We did end up having to build a new face for the base of the counters as the thin paneling stuff was not the best, so my cupboards on the bottom are stronger than ever. My husbad also had to cut the piece off the back of the countertops to make them fit as mine weren't as deep as the ones from the store but with a little trim along the back of the counter and nobody knows. I love my kitchen even to this day. The money was well worth it! If I remember correctly they cost about $150? In Sept we will have lived here for 12 years!!

most high end homes around here have granite or soapstone. my cabs are pretty nice hardwood, from a resale shop too, so they were a great price. i'm partial to laminate and soapstone myself, no granite for me. so, we'll probably run some decent laminate all the way around to 'finish' it off. because we have a vulcan range some of the counters will be extra deep, which i can most easily afford in laminate anyway. and if we sell we'll include the architect's plans for the new kitchen. that's gonna have to do for now.

I currently have top mount sink and it does not have to be replaced. I was just thinking that a particular faucet that I may like may not fit the current sink but would fit a new sink. You guys make an excellent point, however, because I would prefer an under mount sink w/ new countertops.

My fabricator usually recommends 24. Depending on the silicone used for the rim seal, I can see some wanting 48. I think as long as your fabricator uses a proper mechanical means of fastening the sinks to the counters, it should be fine. The silicone merely acts as a seal And the plumber won't be able to jostle things if they are held tight with a Sink Setter, or HUSH. If he uses an adhesive as the only means of attaching the bowl to the stone, you've got other issues that need to be addressed. Ask him how he plans to fasten your sink to the stone, and see what he says.

You only want one sink installation please. You could undermount a Karran sink.

When I've had tops made, when they come to template they take the sink with them. They attach the sink to the tops in their workshop and then deliver and install the tops with attached sink at the same time. Then I have to bring in my own plumber to make the connections.
