Did you hear - maybe - it's been kind of chilly
Comments (19)I don't have any damage yet, nothing burst at home (but pipe did burst at work in the back hall, fortunately not in my office). I should be able to leave work at a reasonable hour tomorrow (?), I'm thinking a good idea would be to shovel the patio -- not easy work since it's below grade (but definitely a good workout!), but if I could manage to get that cleared then all that melting snow wouldn't melt into the family room, and it would clear the drain to allow that to thaw. DH shoveled a bit of it by the door, but it's best to get it all out of there. Nothing I can do about the sump line. Nothing of value in the crawl - that's flooded before, a PITA but not damaging (floor is dirt covered with plastic sheeting, the water just gets absorbed), can do the bucket line with DH if have to. Greatplains - that sounds awful! Are you going to have to have the roof replaced?...See MoreSolar energy in CA., worth it?
Comments (43)I have learned thru my partner that sun slate roof tiles are not as efficient as the standard module panel. any solar panel produces heat as a by product and this heat is generated thru the back of the panel. where as you need air flow to keep the module cool. 3" is the min amount required for air flow any less will reduce the % of current produced. tile modules are less efficient but more appealing in my opinion.Sharp has just come out with there new tile. i went to a 1 day class 2 months ago and installed these on a mock roof at the Sharp center in So Cal. the module is about 18" x40", it can replace about4 tiles.Sharp has modifided the panel and has raised it up about 1" off of the roof and has this new type of item(not released yet, hush) that allows air flow under the tiles, these will do very good on the market. most people think that because you are getting solar modules, you can increase the amount of electricity that you use. but remember when you size your system it is sized for the total kilowatts thru the last year, this is your standard amount of electricity used. if your system is sized for that amount and then you add to your electricity usage you will increase youw anunally wattage. which will decrease your amount you are putting back on the grid, thus increase the amount of your bill.i have heard my partner tell all of his customers, if you have a gas water heater, "keep it"....See MoreThe oldest kitchen remodel on GW...finally finished cherry kitche
Comments (72)RM :( I'm so sorry to read your son is still challenged. And more so to see you're on the horrific "diagnostic" road trip literally. I wish there was something that could be done to blow that danged road up....I don't miss it and hate hearing anyone is traveling it. I can only hope you have a short trip! Virtual hugs in the biggest of ways hun! I have only this advice, learned in year three of that road....carry a big purse and a wine opener. You'll be a friend to many a parent if you lock the door to the parent room and crack open a bottle quietly :) Screw tops can be your friends as well. (And for those horrified that one would drink in a hospital...you haven't spent months in one I guarantee). A quiet glass of wine at 11 when the kids are finally asleep and it's marginally quiet (only the sickest kids are making noise that never goes away, soft cries of pain...that glass of wine alone in the dark while you thank god that's not your child every so often is a peace you don't understand). Enough of that....back to the chickens! hm here's a photo of just the backsplash uninstalled. We framed it in nordic black antique granite to make it fit the space it's in (Joe the tile guy rocked!) So the funny thing is....I've had to move (because of my son's health we had to leave alaska) so we have a new house and two kitchens to remodel/build LOL So I get to start planning all over again :) I can't wait to start from the beginning all over again....(which makes you wonder if I do crack does it not? I can't afford it, I have to finance another kitchen LOL). Star thanks for the nag. I missed the first one :) (You're good LOL) I'll work on the worksheet over the next couple of days. :)...See MoreWorth it? Buying a house/neighbor with junky yard?
Comments (16)Also, depending on where you are the neighbors yard could attract rodents and they could become an issue for you. I might still go for it if it were not visible from my peaceful yard, but it seems like this is. Also, I think talking to other neighbors is a good plan. I spoke to a neighbor once when I was looking at a house with a shared driveway, and he was all too willing to go into the problems with the neighbors and the driveway, some flooding, etc. You can learn a lot from talking with other neighbors. I don't see the apartment as an issue unless it is unusual for where you are. In my town there are little buildings scattered among million dollar houses, and it isn't a deal breaker for anyone. In certain suburban settings it is a huge no. I think the question is if there is something that is unfixable, how much does that detract from your enjoyment and the value of the house. There is a good price for almost anything. Since houses here sell around the million dollar mark, a lower price can sell almost anything. A house a few miles from me just went on in the low 800,000s for a four bedroom with about 2,500 feet. It backed up to the freeway, and a very, very busy freeway at that, 65 MPH speed limit and tons of traffic and use. It sold in 2 weeks even in this market because of the price. If you can get a great deal on it, and move if it doesn't work, it might make sense, but if you are paying close to the comps for other properties without these defects I wouldn't buy something that has defects out of your control....See Morebengz6westmd
