Design Dilemma entry

Looking for mudroom help

Hello, we are looking to renovate our mudroom, and put in lockers/cubbies on the wall on the right. We’d like to keep the storage in the back wall, and considering keeping the shelves on the right wall as well.

as for the layout, in the 2nd picture my husband is standing at the entrance from the garage, and facing the door into the kitchen. The mudroom is to the left.

Would you recommend starting the cubbies right at the entrance, or put a bench or something else at the entrance, or take out the shelves on the right side and do a bench or something before you get to the cubbies?

Thanks for all your posts. To uodate, my husband built the cubbies, and even though its a small space it will certainly be functional!

I’d post a plan sketch of the whole space with the dimensions in order to gain the best responses. Looks narrow so inches matter.

Our mudroom plans started out big, but shrank quite a bit because we decided to move the first floor powder room to that space, then decided to add a first floor washer and dryer there too. (The old laundry room is in the basement.) So, we also have a small mudroom, when I had dreamed of a big one. Here are a few pictures: The coat rack/bench: This is the wall that faces the hooks and bench, and the powder room is behind it (sheesh - we actually took a picture with laundry in the dryer! Definitely not a 'magazine' shoot here... let's just call it real life): I have since removed the shelves under the bench and put 2 big baskets there because our puppy sometimes grabs shoes from there. The baskets aren't as handy as I'd like, so I'm thinking of calling the cabinet maker to see if he can make some drawers. Wish I had done that from the get go. Also if I were to do it again: I would sacrifice a bit of the cabinet size by the W/D to add a broom pull out. I've seen pictures of awesome pullouts (on this forum) that use as little as 4" of horizontal space. I'd also offset the plumbing for the laundry sink to one side so that I'd have just one under-sink cabinet and drawers on the other side. Drawers are just SO much handier. I'm still trying to figure out a better place for gloves, hats, etc. I'm thinking of putting one or two these organizers from IKEA on the wall between the window and the laundry sink. I got that idea from someone who posted pictures of her awesome closet-turned-mudroom, I think on this forum. Here is a link that might be useful: IKEA organizers

Color me confused.....I'm not sure what you mean by "paneling that looks like board and batten"...have never seen any. Why not use board and batten? By "paneling", do you mean adding a smooth surface to a textured wall so you can then add the various boards to make it real board and batten? I've not seen any rooms done that I thought looked cheap when done that way. The room below has the boards closer together than many, but is board and batten. Mud room with beadboard wainscoting...another option

If the intended use includes washing the dog's dishes, a small kitchen sink with attached drainboard would be nice. You can wash hands in almost anything, so look for something that works well for the dishes. Pro Kitchen ... ask the clients how they like cleaning the inside bottom seam in that rustic tub. When it's still a tub you can tip around as you clean it, then tip it upside down to drain.

IMO that space barely has room to turn around in so at best some lockers on the back wall .The locker will be at least 16" deep or useless and thta will leave only 32" to move in no way will that work.

I think your second option would be best if that also removes the shelves in the back. The unit you build with the bench and cubbies would have to be quite shallow but could work.

If there are multiple people dropping off coats, backpacks etc at the same time will they have to squeeze past each other? I would be tempted to do something a bit more temporary first before adding lockers etc - then you can see how the space works

you could add a nice row of heavy duty hooks (in our hall we have some mounted high for coats and some low for backpacks) and then float a few nice baskets below on the floor for shoes, cleats etc — we also have a monogrammed tote bag hung on each of the lower hooks so kids can drop gloves, hats etc in there then they stay together and aren’t all over the place - just a few ideas :)

@la_la Girl We have had upper and lower hooks for a while now with baskets for shoes and it just has become so messy looking. My kids are still young, but we really need a place to store the coats since we dont have another coat closet. We need the storage in the back (2’ deep) to store extra kitchen appliances since we dont have a ton of cabinets in the kitchen.

I’m not sure how this is going to make it less messy than hooks and baskets??? but it’s a closet so thats ok! i’d probably just do hooks and 12” deep shoe shelves to leave the passageway big enough. a bench is nice in theory but makes a longer distance to squeeze by and more likely kids are just going to throw things in.

Well we loved ina house with no way to store coats , back pack etc so we all took our stuff to our bedrooms and IMO that is waht will work best for that space and for sure if you have appliances in there now. Maybe post a plan of the kitchen to see if at least that space can be made more functional.

wow that space is really narrow. Is there any other space in the kitchen for the cubbies? I'm working with my neighbor on her entry plans and she's considering a bench on one side of the room with storage underneath for shoes and arts and crafts style 2/3 height wainscoting on the opposite wall with hooks for coats.

Looks very functional. Your husband did a great job.
Please post when it’s all finished and the coats and boots etc are all in place
