I'm in Austin. We're 8b but I've seen at least one big plumeria tree kept in the ground all winter in my neighborhood. It can be done in a sheltered spot with frost cloth since our freezes are all short-lived. Mike, I found another possible oh-please-let-it-be inflo today, so I feel like I won the lottery! There are a number of moth and butterfly larva that seem to like Paw Paws so proper identification is necessary before treatment of any kind is done. Are the leaves that are "rolled" in a groups or are the single leaves here and there? This link gives some information about some of the pests and innocuous insects that infest these trees. I agree with jean. But it would be helpful on both counts (beetles and 'cocoons) to post some pictures. Ian, I daresay that most of the beetles found in the typical veggie garden would be after the veggies, not the pests! And the larvae of many such beetles are grubs. Laurie, check the picture in the attached link to see if it resembles what you've found. Caterpillar pupae found in the soil (many species do this) often look something like the one in the picture.
