It sounds like too much going on IMO. Black, charcoal, navy etc will be too many lines and rectangles everywhere. I always prefer to simplify.

White trim the same white as the walls is a stunning look. We have used flat white wall paint and matching semi-gloss trim in two houses and love it. So clean and uncluttered.

@Lyn Nielson It does sound busy, which is why I'm curious about it. Yes, we have a double-height space in the living room/kitchen/office with ~18' walls of windows. All of the doors are in a lower ceilinged hallway, with the exception of one in the master bedroom going to the bath.

Yes, we've already purchased the grey flooring, it's not a wood look, it looks like stone. We were hoping to go with a porcelain tile that looks a bit like cold rolled steel, but due to the budget getting out of hand, we opted to nix the tile and go with LVT for the time being, with the intent to replace it after 10-20 years with tile once our bank balance has recovered a bit and the floor has gotten trashed. We aren't enthusiastic about it, but it's one of the few that neither of us hated, and it's inexpensive.

With the amount of additional wood in the house, we aren't worried about the house feeling cold. The combo of the ceiling and a few walls of hickory ply built-ins should bring plenty of warmth to the space.

@tracefloyd I do like the idea of matching the trim to the wall color in an attempt to have it fade away. In that case, should we be looking at painting the interior doors white as well? If so, do we still go with black hinges/hardware or go with a brushed or satin gold/brass hardware so it's less contrasty?

I think Charcoal is preferable to Black because it gives the same effect but is less stark. The only door I would paint a color is the interior front door in a rich Charcoal and continue with black hardware throughout.

Then if you want color, use it in your art or fabrics.

I have black hardware on my doors, inside and out, I have white woodwork and white doors because I spent a lot of money on the hardware and I wanted it to show. As for walls, try something like B.M. Collingwood. It is an off white, with a perfect mix of gray and beige. Works with any natural lights and you can do the entire house in it, then change up accent colors.

I think the color combo sounds like a lot for most spaces but there is always an exception. I love dark, moody rooms with lots of contrast and prefer black trim to charcoal. I have white walls, black trim, periwinkle blue doors, and black hardware in my hallway. It just depends on the whole space.

Thanks guys, this is helpful. The exterior doors are going to be painted to match the sills from the fixed glass(black), the doors are almost entirely glass as well. I quite like contrast, so we may just paint doors black and the remainder of the trim white to match the walls.

We have a lot of color coming in from more easily changed furniture art and accessories. Our sofa is bright orange, our art is generally quite brightly colored and graphical, and my glass collection is blue or jadeite colored. We tend to have a lot of color in the remainder of our decor, maybe I should just try to cool it with everything less easily changed.

The black sounds more dramatic than I'd ever choose but I love art & color, so I'd love to see pictures when you're finished! :-)

@nickel_kg The house is so striking it feels like we owe it some bold decorating choices. We are going safe with exterior colors. We're located in rural Kentucky, and the majority of the houses in the area are white withe black trim, so if the style of our place doesn't match the vernacular, at least the paint choices won't upset the neighbors.

Photos of the house (we just got fixed glass installed!) and I have a shot of the console table a friend made of wood he pulled from our barn that finally collapsed last year with the sofa in the background. Pillows are already completely black and white.
