Mater Bath Reno - ARGHHHH
Comments (14)UGH, sorry to hear of your surprises. Not for the faint of heart for sure! I want to redo my kitchen, downstairs bath and MB and spend most of my GW time on the kitchen forum because I have more vision for that than the bathrooms. Nothing for the baths except I know I'm not changing location for any elements. Won't be DIY and think I want to do all at the same time be done with it and save some construction $, but they I wander over to this bath forum and it's one nightmare after another! Maybe I am too faint of heart to tackle all at once, Just choosing the materials alone might make my head explode! :>) Good luck and please keep us posted....See MoreSmall Bath Reno, 90% Done (Semi-Vintage; ~6x11; 6x6 Running Bond)
Comments (25)Bluekitobsessed, Na_praha, Lauren, and KGW -- Many thanks! Trust me, not every detail is perfect and it took me some time to deal with letting go. [Which I've yet to master, actually.] Lauren -- I do love that shelf AND its price but we don't have much room between tile and mirror, so I will probably file that away for Upstairs Bath. We have the 20w x 10h x 6d cubby to the right of the sink, so *so far* we've been ok. Na_praha -- With single pane windows in the house I always have leaded glass window/door/sidelight envy. Hence my taking liberties with this bath since it wasn't a purist reno anyway! And thanks re the paint color. Since I didn't want a THIRD aqua-in-some-variation room, I swear I tried a zillion colors. But I realized I wanted a shade that blended with the unlighted sconce shade color, so I mixed something up and had Miller recreate. BTW, know what you mean about greys -- thought long and hard before doing a stairwell/upper hall in a cool grey, but skylight + window + fir = not too grim, so: MS KGW! Have missed seeing you around and was gonna send you a personal update, truly. Do NOT know how you got through a problematic reno being increasingly pregnant as I was losing it, esp over the [string of expletives deleted, ha] stuff that went wrong with terrazzo base and windows. I think you get a pass for lack of progress given what you endured PLUS given that you and your DH are new parents! And as much as the soapstone sounds delightful, if you can shrug your shoulders and learn to love the black granite it may be a much better use of your time and energy. Keep us posted!...See MoreWhat did you do with your food and fridge during reno?
Comments (19)I had an angel of a carpenter who cut the old sink and a small section of countertop out together, and built a 2x4 base for it. He made temporary plumbing connections and left it in place for me to use most evenings, when work was done for the day. When it was in the way of the work, it was disconnected and moved around. I don't suppose every crew would be willing to bother with this (in fact, the carpenter and the GC had a friendly but spirited discussion about the time that was taken to do it) but perhaps it's worth asking. It beats washing dishes in a tub or bathroom sink, by a mile. We set up our temporary kitchen in a wide hallway next to the kitchen, a few steps from the bathroom and thus the water source. On one side of the hallway, in a recessed niche we put the refrigerator and a table. The table held the coffeemaker, microwave, and a toaster oven stacked on top of the microwave. The crockpot lived on top of the fridge, when not in use. Under the table we put the garbage, recycling, and a tub for dirty dishes. On the other side of the hallway is a large linen cupboard. I banished the sheets and towels to a bedroom closet, and used the shelves for dishes and dry food storage. It worked quite well, and some fine meals came out of that hallway kitchen. If I did it again (heaven forbid!) I'd add a portable induction burner....See MoreTotal gut and demo starts Monday...what do you do for water?
Comments (28)We're doing...okay. :) The water heater should get here Thursday or Friday, and DH will get the laundry sink hooked up hot and cold. Once that happens life will get much, much easier. I've also ordered a 2nd portable induction hob which is also on the way. For plumbing, for now, I'm using the garden sprayer on our front porch for quick rinsing (the "don't let stuff dry and get crusty before I actually wash it" rinsing) and for actual dishwashing, we're using the bathtub in the main bathroom on the second floor. Hauling a big plastic tub with all the dishes up and down is...sub-optimal. (I'm snorting). As I sit and type my back is on freakin' FIRE. I wish, wish, wish we could do pizza or subs or whatever...but half our house is basically wheat, corn, and soy free...and I'm on a 3-mth protocol that doesn't allow for a bunch of other stuff that makes it extremely difficult to find anything "legal" that's not from scratch. It sucks under normal conditions. With the demo in full swing, it's making me tear my hair out. I'm hoping hoping hoping that we'll gain efficiencies as we go along and figure more stuff out. For example, I was prepping some ribs today for smoking (had to work from home with a sick kid) and realized I had a box of food prep gloves from a previous life that would be MUCH easier than washing my hands every 5 minutes while working with raw pork. AH HA! So the good news, by the end of this coming weekend, we should be as set up as we can get for the next two months. The bad news is that unless our reno is the extreme outlier that gets done earlier than scheduled (I'm snorting again) we're looking at 7 more weeks MINIMUM until our new kitchen is ready for prime-time. I keep thinking about how amazingly awesome it really will be, and how easy everything will seem with this behind us. It's just about time to pick some slabs and tile...2nd most fun thing ever after appliance shopping. :)...See MoreDiana Bier Interiors, LLC
