Our solution to tiny back entry design dilemma
Comments (3)This is super adorable! My first home was also a circa-1960s ranch bungalow (also in Canada) with that type of rear entry - I think it is ubiquitous across homes of this era in Canada and as you know it can get a bit crowded, especially in winter with all the added necessary winter gear - and I wish I had thought of something as clever as that shoe wall. We just had one of those little cuts outs in the lower part of the wall where we piled our shoes instead. Great job!...See MoreDesign dilemma - open floorplan entryway
Comments (8)I like the window seat idea. Be sure to design it with storage for shoes, boots, mittens and other front door needs. Is there a coat closet? You may be able to add a closet on the wall opposite the entry door as part of the window seat design. You’d have to remove the shelves. I love the living room setup. Nice place. P.S. the shelves are attached, but can be removed. Don’t limit yourself because of those shelves. P.P.S. ignore anyone who treat you as though the question is not valid. It is. You are. Your house is beautiful....See MoreFront door entry design help
Comments (7)I agree - lower R front corner will give you a wall on the R that you can arrange "foyer" type furniture on (hall tree, breakfront, narrow table with mirror above). Furniture can group around fireplace more easily then, and the area on the R side of the living room becomes a traffic area leading into the house, to the stairs & back of the house. That's the way the traffic wants to flow anyway - don't break up the living space by having the door centered and traffic flowing right into the center of the room. By moving the door to the R, you'll also have a bigger front porch area at the left end for chairs etc. Widen the front porch gable so that the front steps are centered on the new front door location. Another idea is to delete the R side of the porch that wraps the corner - it looks as if it isn't covered and seems like an odd & awkward space to me....See MoreFront door Design Dilemma
Comments (5)agree. remove those stone flower beds, remove the red brick porch and do that in cement if you like. I'd prob cover it w/black slate or something. for that yellow stone? I'd cover it w/vertical cedar slat wood these are horizontal, and some are comoposite cedar, but see how they look next to black? you know, you could try and paint them black to match the siding. they painted them here but you'd still have to do something w/that brick landing. I might be tempted to paint that gray portion black. paired w/the wood, it looks nice do this in the flower beds after you remove them....See MoreChristie Applequist
