Speaking of cats - a kitten update

Well she is now nine months old and we've had her for almost seven months. Maggie, the resident cat, still doesn't like her but the hissy fits are much less frequent and usually not much more than a short hiss or growl. In the last couple weeks the kitten is not chasing her or jumping on her much and is instead licking her head!! Today it was more like seven licks instead of 2-3 - no hissing or growling. Maggie is reclaiming some of her favorite spots and is hanging around with us more even when the kitten is in the vicinity and is otherwise behaving more like her old self - not completely but much better. Our vet said we needed to give it at least six months and I guess she knew what she was talking about. Maybe by the time we've had her a year all will be peaceful.

Yoko, the kitten, is really a mama's girl - snuggles up on my lap every morning and "has coffee" with me. The unfortunate thing about this is that she's kind of a scaredy cat with strangers including the cat sitter. We've only left her twice and the first time was with my neighbor at the lake and she spent a lot of time with them so Yoko warmed up pretty quick and got into lap time with her. However the regular cat sitter is here for an hour twice a day so she just starts coming around about the time we are getting back home. I think Maggie loves it though as she can get a lot of attention while Yoko makes herself scarce.

Sue, As long as they don't add, "Crazy" in front of "cat lady"....I am known as the cat lady in our neighborhood and I honestly think there might be a sign at the end of the street, "Home for Wayward Cat/kittens" and it's pointed right at my house.... My Dh, like your's, has put his foot down, softly...(He's almost as bad as me.) At one time, we had 2 feral mommas on the patio and each had had a litter of 6...When the kits started getting older the mothers tried taking them into the bushes, to teach them to live on their own...That's when we bundled up all the kittens, put them in our basement and would bring them out for feedings...We had to sit with them and as soon as they were done eating, back in the basement...There were times when momma would start through the yard, make a noise and all the babies would run after her...My DH would run with a big box and be scooping up kittens along the way...As soon as the kittens were weaned, we were able to get them adopted...It was like giving up my own kids and boy did I screen the new parents...We were able to get those 2 females spayed and they are still living on our patio....I loved having all those little ones and often would foster for one of our local no kill shelters. From fostering, I did keep 2 little girls and now when I mention fostering, DH gives me that look....But what a thrill, watching them grow.....I keep saying, if I ever win that lottery, I'll have the best shelter around.....See, how I can go on and on when it comes to talking about fur babies.......You should be around when I pull out the pictures....

What a precious photo! I agree that Yoko will mature and things will simmer down. Honestly, it sounds to me like things are going very well, exactly as one would expect. So Maggie is miffed on occasion. It's ok. And I mean that with the kindest intention. Cats tend to "show out" in dramatic ways and we can easily interpret their behavior as very undesirable, when it's quite normal in multi-cat homes. I predict that the kitties will continue to adapt and a harmonious balance will be attained most of the time. But probably not always, and that's something you just have to be ok with. Look how wonderful it is that you're giving these cats a caring, loving home. That's really the most important thing, so please don't lose sight of that when things go a little south. (Still happens at my house from time to time. Drama queens, and kings!)

Katz, I made a post about the great success I had with a feline calming product, like Feliway but a different brand. Our cat had suddenly began peeing any where BUT his litter box, due to some environmental stresses. Our vet suggested a spray and diffuser of this feline hormone stuff which we purchased, implemented, and waited with baited breath. It worked immediately and is still working to this day. The vet said they used calming products in side the examination rooms, surgery prep areas, and kennels. If you aren’t using something already, a product like this could support your efforts in creating a bond amongst your cats.

Still waiting on closer to perfect, but sounds like a lot of progress!

We have a must be only cat. She would not ever budge on that. She barely tolerates our company!

Funny you said that about licking. Even though they are dogs, Betty and Cricket haven’t bonded, except for Cricket licking Betty’s eyeballs and ears!😂

Just heard a low growl and came around the corner to find this - nothing really going on though I think Yoko may not have been able to resist her tail.

Has Yoko been spayed yet? That can unfortunately have a regressive effect on cat's bonding. I've read it has to do with the smell, probably from anesthesia that the spayed cat brings home. It happened to us with a tightly bonded brother/sister pair who slept with arms wrapped around each other right up until then. Broke my heart. So if she has, and that's behind you, wonderful! If not, maybe ask you vet if there is something you can do to mitigate.

She’s been spayed - she’s been better since then. Apparently there can be competition between the females for the male even if some of them are spayed/neutered. Yoko was getting more aggressive toward Maggie the older she got and she’s definitely better since she was spayed.
