Can you please say why you care whether it is Dolomite or granite? I am assuming it's due to how stain-proof or not it is? If that is your concern, the best way to know is to test it yourself if you can get a small sample. From my "armchair" view, we've seen a similar stone with the garnet flecks on this forum many times. It is sometimes called Kashmir White granite, but has many names and are all in the same family of stones. If that is true, that is the type of stone that will need to be sealed 3-4 times a year to prevent stains.

I would not choose that stone for two reasons. One is that I want a more maintenance-free counter, but that is me. There are many people on this forum who have counters that are higher maintenance who love it and don't care about the maintenance.

My second issue is the garnet you mentioned. The stones with garnet or the "red inclusions" you mentioned end up looking like something like blood has spilled or splattered, giving the constant urge to wipe it off.

Here are a couple of close-ups of stones with garnet flecks. They're not the same stones as your OP's, but the close-ups will give you the idea of what I mean by wanting to wipe it off all the time.

Thanks for pointing me to Karen. After reading her ’Telling White Stones Apart’ article it makes me think it is granite. The slab colors are not consistently smooth and if you look at the closeups I posted you can see the variation in minerals with the garnet, blacks, and creams that are indicative to granite. But even with all that, I’ll most likely go back to the slab warehouse and bring a knife to see how hard it is.

It looks VERY similar to the granite we put in our kitchen 2 summers ago. There are a minimum of small red dots, but none stand out. (I picked slabs with more gray blue.)

We did 2 coats, but one would have been enough! We've had ZERO stains!

It's in our "summer kitchen" in our lower level. And I promise you, no one is even pretending to be careful!

In a conversation with "Stain-Proof" before hand, the main thing to watch for is WHERE the slabs originate. He advised us to avoid any from India labeled "Kashmir White", as they were an inferior grade compared to the ones from Brazil (which is sold under several different color names).

Our experience has borne this out.

I brought a piece of dolomite from the slab I was going to buy and tested it at home with red sauce. No thank you. Not maintenance free. With that in mind, I see a lot of people loving the natural stone with all of its flaws indicating it brings beauty.
