Super White (not granite, not quartzite, marble-ish dolomite)

I fell in love with a slab of Super White at the slab yard and want it to top my white kitchen cabinets and island in our new build. I think I have read every thread about it and all the discussions about what it actually is. Arizona Tile is where I found it, and they have it classified as a marble. I've been testing a sample at home and successfully scratched and etched it. So maybe a wise person would stop there.

There have been some here that have said they have no regrets about installing it. But those threads are either very old or not old enough for someone to note their experience 3 or 4 years down the road.

Anyone out there have regrets/still love their super white? I am ok with a patina, my husband my not be but will live with whatever I choose, but I really can't find a granite that I like at all. We have 5 children and my housekeeper tends to clean how she wants, so that is a consideration as well. We are building this new house to be the center of family/friend get togethers. I am talking myself out of it but don't want to have to "live" with a granite that I don't like just because it wears well.

I am also mildly concerned that my fabricator (who works out in the country) might not be experienced in fabricating it, since there is some indication that it crumbles. That concerns me too.

anyone? Maybe I am looking for an enabler?

Mamabear, I'll gladly be your enabler. I fell in love with Super White here on GW. When we went to look at slabs at the fabricator our builder used, I didn't hold out much hope that I would find any slabs so never mentioned Super White to DH. As we were walking through the yard, DH was ahead of me. I found him stopped in front of a lot of SW. I couldn't have asked for a better reaction from him. We tagged 3 slabs and took loads of pictures. I committed the GW sin of not obtaining a sample so no testing was done. I was just excited to have found this amazing stone and that DH was totally on board with it. Much drama occured after templating that I won't go into, but ultimately, we ended up with gorgeous countertops in our kitchen, master bath and half bath. We had the fabricator apply a sealer that supposedly would protect it for 10 years. One year after moving into our new home, I have experienced no staining or etching. I'm not an obsessive housekeeper, nor is DH who is home during the day while I work. I do have some small pieces now that I could test, but I've chosen not to. Don't want to jinx my good fortune.

Good luck with your decision. I'm certainly happy with mine.

We got a piece of super white for our basement bathroom. It's just small - 36" vanity top, but I brought home a giant sample and tried to etch it and I couldn't. I have a marble island, so I'm very aware of marble etching (and love it anyway). I have granite perimeters. This super white we have in our bathroom acts like granite. Here's a picture of what we have:

pebbles, I have posted on this material many times before. It is not a granite or a quartzite. The best way I could describe it would be a Quartzitic/ Marble. It has characteristics of a truly hard Quartzite with soft marble deposits that are very soft. Those spots scratch and etch. When this material was first introduced it was quite expensive like all Quartzites, then when the truth worked itself out, the Brazilians dropped the price. If you use it, treat it like a white marble in the kitchen. Honed only. James

I like that pendant. (I'm looking for something similar to replace my beloved pendants over my peninsula that have some issues so I popped over to the CB website.) Are you OK with the low light output? 25 watts is very low. My two glass pendants have 60 watt bulbs and seem like just enough light. Fewer would not be sufficient. Hope I didn't burst your bubble. It's so hard to find just the right pendant shape, in just the right size, with just the right lumens, at just the right price!

Thank you all for your help. Okay, it is sealed. So far, I have performed 20 min and 1 hour test with ketchup, balsamic, turmeric paste, orange wedge, red wine, olive oil, water, and bar keeper's friend paste(I use this alot in the sink and want to make sure it will not hurt counter)... For 20 min and 1 hour-wiped off with water, NOTHING! YAY! But...yes, the oil and water area darkened...I can tell it is soaking up the liquids. Actually, when dh brought in the sample from the rain, I could see that the areas under the rain drops were slightly darker. Did the same test over 3 hours, but added crushed blackberry...it is slighty stained now-the blackberry and turmeric left very faint discoloration on the polished area, and a very noticeable stain on the unsealed/unpolished edge. The water and oil, again, left a very very slight darker spot that I cannot see after a few minutes. NO etching. AT all. Not even sorta. I decided to crush a blackberry on it and see what happens after 20 minutes...no stain at all, wiped up with water. So...I am okay. I was most worried about etching, and it is not happening. The staining? Am I correct in assuming that this will happen with any natural stone? I know it is not supposed to be as porous as granite or marble, but it still is some what porous right?(kinda like you are saying PreciousStone?). I am thinking this just needs some more/better sealing? Thoughts? What type of sealant you think?

"Our stone company said that the New Super White that we already purchased is a Quartzite we already had template so there is no going back for us now. Sadly I came across the information that it is not a quartize after the fact. Countertops go in next week so thinking maybe I can have stone company out on an additional sealer before and know what I am getting into. I really hope I wasn't duped...feeling a little dumb that I just took their word for it." I disagree. You're in a position of strength now. They want to get tops installed in order to be able to collect. If you don't take delivery, they can't collect. A critical part of business is customer education which leads to customer satisfaction. They haven't properly set customer expectations; make them do their job please.
