Leaning into a "funky" 1970s multi colored bathroom - thoughts?

THOUGHTS WANTED FOR A "FUNKY" 1970's BATHROOM!

This bathroom was built in the 1970's. It is the main bathroom that guests visiting the house would use, on the first floor. Our "grand plan" will be to remodel in a couple of years. But for now, am looking to "lean into" the current aesthetic, in effort to try and optimize the colorful vibe, on a budget. Other potentially relevant notes: we live in Austin, house interior decor style is eclectic (picture of adjacent living room area included, just for reference). Thanks in advance for your ideas!

I love it, before and especially after with those deep blue walls!

Did you consider painting each drawer of the vanity a different color, like an abstract? That was my first thought but seeing your "after" I like the way the tiles are the standout; a color-block vanity might be too much.

I’d keep the vanities white and just repaint if they are beat up. Change the light fixtures and you’re set!

I will disagree that the seam will be obvious. Not if the pattern is matched properly. Moreover, the curtain will be large enough to have some gentle folds in it so the seam won't be noticeable. The other alternative is to do a double shower rod. The outer one is for the decorative curtain which can be smaller than a regular shower curtain and hangs there to add color and hide the plumbing and the waterproof curtain. The inner rod is for a waterproof curtain (white, clear, whatever) which slides the length of the tub for when in use. Mom did that in her bathroom where the fabric she loved was a remnant and didn't have enough to do the whole shower curtain. By doing so, you aren't limited to shower curtains, but can either make your own panel or buy any drapery panel you want of an appropriate length. In this example, they used the decorative fabric on either side with a pullback, but note the other rod underneath for the waterproof curtain. Here, the panels hang straight. Here is an example of a panel on just one side. Note the outer rod doesn't even reach the length of the tub.

For the floor, I would use Laticrete Natural Grey, #24 (or a like with another brand). Unclear about the "no grout lines" for the carrara. How do you have no grout?? If that feature accent is on the wall with the carrara, we would suggest in this case that those be grouted the same and would consider Laticrete Silver Shadow for the carrara and the feature as well. Your contractor can do a mock up with a few left over pieces of each prior to grouting. That way you can visualize it before it is installed.

We are adding a bath and went for a larger version of this floating vanity - ours isn't installed yet, but I really like the idea of making it easier to clean the floors (and that's a good idea if you're hoping to age in place!). You do need extra support, so it's worth being sure of that before choosing a floating vanity. I like the look of a floating vanity - the Ikea Godmorgon would be fine with me except that neither is this a DIY job nor is there an Ikea store anywhere near here. A truly floating vanity may not be feasible anyway, because the plumbing runs down through the floor. On the other hand,the pipes are close to the wall, and because the room is so small, a box enclosing them would not be visible (nor would the pipes themselves, I realize). it will bum you out if you redo your bathroom and sell your house only to find they've ripped out your new bathroom to do what they want with it I would probably never know! The seller of this house and I never met, and if I were to sell the house within just a few years it would be to move out of the area. In practical terms houses in the immediate neighborhood go to first-time buyers who are financially stretched and can't afford to make any large changes for a while. While I love the idea of putting in a retro bathroom I might feel differently if there were anything original to work with beyond the door and window frames, and if the flowering of mid-century design had reached bathrooms by 1951. I have some pictures of original mid-century bathrooms that I like, but they are all from houses built about a decade later. Some of the design elements in them have now come to be considered fresh and new. Thanks for your comments.

I agree on leaving the mirror. If you use adhesive to glue a frame to it over time anything you use to clean the mirror will drip down to the adhesive and dissolve it and create buildup that is visible between the mirror and the frame which you can see but can't clean as it will be down in the crack between the two. A mirror set in a frame has a much closer fit and is usually mechanically attached to the wall and the frame. Also a frame is just one more thing to dust/clean when you clean that bathroom. Your existing mirror is clean and modern.

Sorry, but I don't care for the idea of the dark blue walls. They compete for attention with the tile. There isn't anything wrong with the current wall color. The whole room is unique, I'm sure guests will get a kick out of it.

Agree with thinking again about the blue - right now the space is light, bright and fun - feel like the navy will “harsh the vibe” as the kids say 😅

No no no, you must do the blue, that's what brings it from kinda interesting random tile to utterly fantastic bathroom!!! :-)

That bathroom is gorgeous. Someone put a lot of thought and love into it when it was done. I wouldnt change a thing. I dont mind the deep blue color, but, I do prefer it just as it is. Freshen it up with a new coat of same paint, if you need to, but, I would never change that bathroom.

OMG I love that bathroom!! I like the blue too. It goes well with your darkest red. The problem with you mock up pic is that the white tile looks pink due to the lighting.

I like the blue walls, but would paint the sink vanity in yellow.

Fantastic house! 😍 I agree with the others that it’s really nice as is. I’d change the lighting and maybe paint the vanities blue, but I’d keep the walls white and the mirrors are fine. I love the light fixtures and art you have in the mock-up!

I would use the colors in a less deep tone for the paint and shower curtain. I would keep the vanities white. Add color with the towel selection.

I'm thinking this is more 90s than 70s but I could be wrong.
