How about a folding screen? It wouldn’t cut down on noise much, but it may give you a sense of privacy. Since you’re in a apartment you probably can’t hang a track on the ceiling, or I would suggest a hospital type curtain that you could open or close.

Thank you... I have in my mind using 2+ tall /wide pieces of furniture to block my area off maybe I can get a big black one curtain and shut out light that way and use the folding divider as a door? Depends on how much space you have for furniture arrangement. It may look tacky or it may work. Try sketching it out on paper. When I lived in a studio apartment I used a divider that I bought at a garage sale for $3 to give my sleeping area some privacy. It was perfect for me.

I move too much for sleep mask and I have been using them for years so I like what you suggested. I've got headphones sleep mask so I can listen to my meditation. the issue is when I am overwhelmed during the day and need to be alone. I have been hiding in the bathroom but other people have to be able to get in there. I have Huntington's and when I get overwhelmed it can turn into anger or aggression and I am trying to minimize the odds of that

Oh, I see what you are saying. You need somewhere to be alone. This might sound strange, but is sitting in your car an option? When I need to be alone to think or need to make a private phone call, or just want some undisturbed quiet, I sit in my car so I can be alone. It's not ideal but if I am in my bedroom or bathroom with the door locked it seems to be an invitation for my kids to come knocking!

One thing that you could look into is noise canceling headphones with white noise, white noise ear buds or a white noise machine.

You can use a tent frame for the bed or a canopy frame that hangs from the ceiling that creates privacy when you need it. The nice thing about the ceiling canopy is that you can just tie it back when you are not using it to keep it out of the way.

Would there be a way to partition one of the bedrooms (your mom's) so that you could have a private space. I understand that it might be very small, but could be much more private/quiet than the LR. Also, if your daughter is pregnant, when the baby comes, your son could then sleep in the LR.

Dividing your mom's room with tall bookcases and tension shower curtain rods could give each of you more storage and privacy. I painted murals on the cardboard backs of the bookcases we used to create a closet in my daughter's room when she was little but adding bulletin board and hooks might be more useful. Tall metal cabinets and magnet hooks could work and be dressed up with contact paper. These could also wall off space in living areas.

Could the young people share the living area while you and mom get the bedrooms?

I think we need to have some clue as to the size of the spaces. I am sorry about your issues for sure but I am not sure how to get privacy in a home with so many people . Maybe could you have a lie down in your Moms bedroom when you are overwhelmed during the day. I think this is a very difficult situation to get any amount of privacy . I assume this is a money issue for renting . A to scale floor plan showing all the spaces with all the meaurements clearly marked is how you will get real help here. I know you are ok with sleeping in the living room but is it actually the best thing for everyone in the household? It sounds like your whole family may need to put your needs first for their own safety as much as for your comfort. I know Huntington's disease can have a big impact on emotions, anger, aggitation, and stress can really have an impact on that.

Being able to have your own space to retreat to, one where you won't be tripping over baby things, don't have to have the baby crying in your space near you, sounds important in addition to your need for sleep. Do you feel comfortable asking (or telling) your daughter and her boyfriend that you would like their bedroom and they can take over the living room? Do you think this would make a difference for you? I think you and your disease do need to come first.

I can only imagine how difficult your situation is. I think the above suggestions of creating a separation in one of the bedrooms or sectioning a small area of the living room off are the best ideas to manage the current situation, but long term you will need more space, especially with the baby. I hope you have spoken with an advocate that can assist you with getting subsidized housing. Sadly too many cities have wait lists that are years deep, but sometimes, with progressive health issues you can get bumped up the list. In these situations it is the squeaky wheel that gets the help. If you don't know who can help in your area or how to get an advocate call 211.

I also know that as a parent you want your kids to have their own room and their own space and we do for them first, but with your health issues you need to get rest and your kids are probably better able to handle sleeping in the living room than you are.

With a baby coming, your daughter may be better set up in living room with the crib, so that your son isn’t woken up multiple times in the night and she has less stress. You then share with him and add a privacy screen.

During the day, the baby could sleep in a basinette (and later a foldable crib) in your mom’s room. This way you or he can have your own time when needed during the day and the quiet you both need at night. Your daughter can use your room during the day to recharge her batteries when baby is asleep.

It’s even more difficult for you, with your illness, but if everyone’s welfare can be addressed the best way possible, it may lessen the strain a bit Good luck.

Have you reached out to social services, along with sharing the very special needs of Huntingtons ? Perhaps with a letter from the doctor, fully explaining the special needs for privacy. The situation is going to worsen, and seems the daughter, boyfriend and impending child need a MOVE to their own place/space.

We've no idea your location, available services. Whether that is urban or rural. Whatever and whichever, it seems destined to become quite untenable for you, and soon.
