I'm not sure if any of these appeal to you but we bought our table here about 7 years ago. I love it. Ours is 6' with painted black base. It has held up extremely well to my family of six, with four kids eating all their meals here, as well as using it for homework, arts and crafts, etc. We have six chairs but only use four, with two one one side, one on either end, and a bench on the other side. However, when necessary, we can easily add a third chair to the one side and seat three on the opposite bench. Eventually I will replace the bench and only have chairs. Not sure how far you are from Annapolis, but it would make a lovely day trip. The shop is right on the main street into town, with loads of other shops and restaurants in walking distance so if you have time, it would be a nice outing for the day. This furniture is wood chips compressed with glue, with a slap of cheap stain on top. It's awful given how much the pieces cost and how long you have to wait to have them delivered. The upholstered pieces don't hold up to real life either. I've also experienced dye fading in expensive PB towels and bathmats with the very first wash, while using a mild detergent like Cheer to protect the colors. The spots never stop appearing. Pottery Barn would not even consider taking them back. So I buy all household textiles elsewhere. Walmart has better quality towels. We shall see how these retailers fair in the next year or so, as the economy is changing rapidly, and how responsive they are to customers when there are fewer of them.

Estate sales are your best bet, but it can take time (and often they only take cash, with delivery extra or not available). Ballard Designs is a company I've used occasionally for over a decade. They were recently mentioned in an interior designers article as "this is my secret place to go for well-made, stylish, moderate-priced furniture." I've bought mostly small pieces from them but been very satisfied. They have the Casa Florentina table in a variety of color washes for the pedestal base. The price is $1799, solid beechwood which I have found to be extremely fine-grained and durable. In fact, you have to like whatever color it's stained (the top, in this case, is walnut-stained) because it's said to be almost impossible to strip and re-stain beechwood by any home method. Ballard recently had a 20% off sale, which would have been $359 off the full price to bring it down within your budget. You might want to call them and find out when they're having their next sale, or at least get on their mailing list.
