Blue flower question
Comments (18)Actually, i think it's a plain ol' batchelor button, centaurea dealbata. Some of them look like that. Mountain bluets are much bigger across- like 2-3" and they are hard to grow in this area- goodness knows i've tried repeatedly. If you let the batch buttons/cornflowers reseed a few generations they end up looking like this rather than the very double poms that you start with from cultivated seed. Mountain bluets also have this very distinct black edge to their scaling on the buds before they open up. The leaves are much broader and longer than the regular cornflower's, too. It's kind of like cornflower on steroids, but much more stretched out and elegant, and the centers are more pink. They do look very similar but take a look at this link, and see if the plant itself look like yours. You can see the black edge in that first shot of the flower. I'll look and see if i can find any shots of my gone wild cornflowers to compare. The ones at mordecai used to look just like yours, with the narrow foliage and small flowers, and were an annual, not perennial. Here is a link that might be useful: cent. montana...See MoreWANTED: Named daylilies, etc., for perennials

Comments (474)I'll put a new thread on later. Look for it in the morning. The seedlings are getting bigger. Still no germination on the G. cancellatus and Senna ditymobotrya. I read that the cancellatus seeds should be sown in straight perlite. It also said to use fresh seeds. The other 2 Gomphocarpus species germinated fine. I'll give them anorher week and then I'll start digging. You can get popcorn cassia at etsy for 9 bucks....See Moregrowing native plants for wildlife
Comments (1091)That's standing cypress for sure Skip. I have 5 plants that made it through winter, but their leaves are tinged brown, your plant looks nice and green. They don't like being transplanted. Your wife will love it when it blooms and has hummingbirds using it. Are those buttercups in your meadow? I think a lot of bog plants need darkness to germinate. All my bog pots in the garage have tons of germinating seedlings. Somehow they can sense that it's spring. They look like orchids or Xyris. It's supposed to snow tomorrow, but I hope to get all the bog pots outside again asap. I love bats. That's a great shot of them leaving their box Iris. I want to get a bat-house like yours. Should they be put on the north side of the house so the bats don't overheat? I might get a sicklepod vollunteer or 2, but they always freeze before their seeds ripen. I threw a bunch of seeds a couple years ago. I don't have any home pics but these pics by Adam Black were taken in the North Carolina foothills....See More
