bleached oak floors...too dated????please help
Comments (17)Thank you for the responses. I'm not sure if I have bleached oak or white wash. It is not "pinkish" which I've assumed was more of a pickeled, it is more whiteish or yellowish actually after being 20 years old. Bigdoglover (I love big dogs, too btw..) the reason I didnt want to involve the stairs and railing was because it also includes the whole upstairs and hallway (and the floor in my bedroom, but that didnt bother me as much) so, I just didnt want to deal with it. I think what I have decided to do is carpet the stairs and hallway and get the warmer wood in the kitchen/dining/livingroom that I've always wanted. I'll have to just sand and stain the banisters, thats all. I dont mind the carpet in these areas, as it is now I have a runner on the stairs and hallway...so this will just be wall to wall in that area. There are too many problems with the bleaching and besides, my husband really despises it. Thanks again for all of your help. Now on to newer problems.....!...See MorePale wood floor for dark bedroom (oak floor adjacent)
Comments (5)I don't think you'll have as much trouble matching the red oak as you imagine. When I had my floors refinished (not stained), they had to pull out a few damaged boards and replace them. You can't tell at all where the repair was done. I frequently see comments about orangey oak floors being dated, and I find it baffling. My house was built in 1911, and that was apparently the ONLY flooring choice available at the time. Pretty much every house in the area built before WWII (barring a recent remodel) has the same floor. Is it dated? Well, yeah, to a 50 year time frame during which my house was built. So what? They are so ubiquitous that they don't merit comment. Complaining about orange oak floors is like complaining that the sky is blue. They just are....See MoreColor palette for a gradual upgrade with oak and blue fixed
Comments (6)So I played around on Behr's color website. What do you think about this color palette: Here's the sample picture again, so it's easier to see "side by side" So think of the large square which is Bleached Almond as the cabinets (the fixed), the Jazz Blue as the accent wall color and almost the color of the window pane trim, maybe the gray Fortress Stone as the carpet (and I guess the tile for the kitchen), and the large rectangle Polished Marble as the rest of the walls? Or maybe the Fortress Stone is the rest of the walls, while the Polished Marble is the carpet (would try to find an Oriental rug in these colors to top the carpet in the main room). Ugh, and I haven't factored in the wood trim being honey oakish....See MoreMatch and Refinish Red Oak floors or Replace Everything?
Comments (27)I just wanted to update everyone with our decision. We were being quoted anywhere from $12k-$16k to lay and feather in about 600 sq ft of 3 1/4 " red oak down and to refinish everything so it matched. We decided to rip it all out because it was never going to give us the look that we wanted. And to get a flooring look we love, including the extra demo, it's going to cost us just under $13k for 1530 sq ft. of engineered wood floors. I've attached a photo of a sample of our lower and pantry cabinet with the sample of our flooring choice. Our uppers and island will be white cabinets....See Morebeeboo22
