That is a flower on your bamboo palm.

see if you can VERY GENTLY release it ... cut with scissors on the side away from the flower .. and then just walk away. if you made enough room.. the flower will grow itself out of the round form ...

if its flowering.. its usually a good sign the plant is rather happy .. [or dying.. lol ...but lets ignore that] .. so dont screw it up now by loving it too much ...

if you want some other general help.. how about a pic of the whole plant including the pot ... we could make sure its happy for you..or find out it isnt ...

Hello folks, I saw your postings about growings bamboo in Ohio zones. I'd like to grow it indoors in Ohio - in a pot - to replace a ficus that has outgrown its surroundings. I'd like to use bamboo (conceptually) because it grows upright and could be used to cover a window area - as does the ficus currently - in lieu of traditional window coverings. The window faces West and gets a lot of sun. What species would be suitable for the climate changes that happen indoors - heating and cooling seasonally? What are the root systems like? Any issues with potting bamboo? What do I need to do to prune it, control it and maintain it? Thanks for your help.

The important thing is to make sure the soil in the pot is fast draining and the pot has good drainage holes. When the soil starts to get a bit on the dry side give it plenty of water. Times will vary according to how hot/dry the weather/environment is and how fast the soil dries. If the soil is very fast draining then you are not likely to have problems with over watering. That's better than having heavy, slow draining soil and needing to be very careful to not over water. If water doesn't drain well from the soil you can get a build up of minerals/fertiliser and get fertiliser burn on your plants. If you give the plant a good flush every now and then you avoid that mineral build up in the soil.

I’ve had that happen, just cut the brown parts off & put the plant outside for a while, out of direct sun. It will probably grow new shoots off the cut stems, mine did.

I find the marketing names for bamboo to be confusing, but I am assuming this is Fargesia murieliae. This bamboo is hardy to about -20C, which means that is the temperature at which it will die if exposed for more than a day or two. Damage to the foliage and culms occurs above those temperatures, and the plants are even more vulnerable if they are in pots rather than in the ground. I think what you are seeing is carryover damage that wasn't immediately apparent after the cold snap. The issues with aphids, etc., did not cause this. They still look healthy to me despite the damaged leaves. Continue to treat them normally and well watered and you should see new leaf tips forming in several weeks. The main issue is what you will do to prevent this next winter. Are you able to bring them inside in a cold snap?

Very informative, thank you. Ken's point concerns me because i have been underwatering it for a few weeks out of laziness and that it seems indestructible, and I was cutting away some dying leaves from that stalk when I noticed the flower. It is north-facing and I split it once about 7 years ago. I don't feed it, just water it (generously when in the mood). As you can see from the photo, it's about 11 feet tall which doesn't jive with descriptions of bamboo palms on google. Any other info is greatly appreciated folks! P.S. I will water better today because of the dying leaves, but did underwatering cause this?
