Front entryway, what do I do?!

last year

A door on one side to the bedroom and closed stairs on the other. The front door is off to one side, so I can put anything in that wall. The mirror and the wreath is going. I need ideas!

What have you sodded with? I would suggest St. Augustine or Zeon Zoysia as they have the best shade tolerance. Another option would be to use the shade to your advantage and create a shady perennial/shrub bed.

The place to start is with a PLAN. Even though you might decide to act as your own landscape designer after getting some advice from people here, you'll still need to convert whatever ideas you come away with into a plan before doing any work. In order to get good advice, you need to convey good information about the existing conditions of your property, mostly through pictures. Here, however, comes the complaint: your pictures are lacking in the information they provide. They're dark, a bit fuzzy, incomplete, and some not from good viewpoints. I see some big trees ... but I don't really see them, or how they affect the picture of your house. One picture should be distant enough to include them so we know how they fit in. Then, from a distance of about 25' from the house, lined up with the front door, there should be a complete, left-to-right span of the property, from lot line to lot line so we can see more detail of what's planted in front of the house. The pictures should slightly overlap so we can follow one picture to the next, and understand what relates to what. Hopefully, you could take such pictures when there are not strong shadows covering the plantings.

Yardvaark I understand your point, but it is incorrect. As a driver I can say with certainty it is always the drivers responsibility to make sure they have clearance regardless of what governmental regulations are in place. They differ from location to location. Common sense dictates that a commercial driver in a heavily treed residential area with low volume of traffic should check the route prior to proceeding. This is even more true with a flat bed hauling a piece of equipment with a moveable arm such as this back hoe. Because the arm could be extending higher then normal due to loading error by the operator. Generally the standardized height for a heavy truck class A or B would be 13'6" any thing over that would require a special permit and pre planned trip routing. Even telephone poles sag and bend causing the wires to droop lower then what they were set at when installed. The equipment owner could pursue a case against the homeowner if they were damaged because of a low hanging utility line or vegetation over a public street. They may or may not win. However if that was my driver and damaged the load because of his negligence of failing to scout the route in advance and was moving at a speed that pulled such a large branch down without slowly going under to see if they had clearance I would have to discipline that driver By your logic if my driver hit someone on a bike who wasn't obeying the law because they were riding the bike facing the wrong direction on that residential street it would be the fault of the bike rider for breaking the law instead of the driver being at fault. That could go either direction in court too. Those look like Live oaks. Great trees the thing about them is there branches are low on the trunk and spread back towards the earth. Thats how they evolved. Handles wind a lot better then a tree that grows up taller with narrower arching branches. The live oak has spreading wide canopy and can be difficult with clearance as they get older. Given a huge space the branches will touch the earth. I'd move the stairs to go straight from the door. It would highlight the door. Flank the walk from the stairs with plants. Grasses would be modern. I'd put a tall skinny tree in front of the chimney and between the windows on the left. Make the style modern for the stairs. If you paint, I'm not a fan of the reddish color and I'd pick a color with more contrast for the trim.

First, I’d size the runner so that it’s in proportion to the entire doorway including the sidelight, and center it in the hall, not just center by width, but length as well. Which might mean you need a different doormat to sit directly in front of the door and have the runner match up in length more to the stairs wall length. I think once you get the runner situation situated, it’ll be much easier to decide what other items you might need or want.

If the wall you are asking about is the one with the wreath, the possibilities are endless. A long console to span part of the wall with a mirror on top or lamps flanking an Art piece would look very "entry" -like.

Baskets underneath can store items if the console doesn't have much space. If you don't want that, you can decorate with panelling, large art or a gallery wall art. I would love to put black framed pictures with white super white matting and then a plant on the side. Something simple

The rug isn't the right size , at the very least it should cover a few inches around the door, I drew a line where a carpet should span from. I think a different design on the rug also would look better. The one you have is clashing a little with the floors.

I would paint the front door a dark colour and install white roman shades on both windows.

It difficult to say what lenght the runner should be from the photos but it should be centered in the width of the hallway. A colourful vintage rug would be a nice touch along with a narrow console with mirror along the wall on the right. Perhaps you can replace one of the potlights with a decorative pendant or flushmount.

As you enter the house, with the door swing, the stairs are the first thing you see. Put a dramatic work of art on the wall facing the front door at the bottom of the stairs to draw the eye. Possibly a chest or table there if possible, with a lamp on it to brighten up that dark space and highlight the artwork.

Then the narrow console as suggested on the wall with the wreath. Also as suggested an interior door mat so a runner can be centered on the long hall and the console.
