Sorry for the bad news, chocolate lovers...

But there’s a dark side to this “healthier” chocolate. Research has found that some dark chocolate bars contain cadmium and lead—two heavy metals linked to a host of health problems in children and adults.

The chocolate industry has been grappling with ways to lower those levels. To see how much of a risk these favorite treats pose, Consumer Reports scientists recently measured the amount of heavy metals in 28 dark chocolate bars. They detected cadmium and lead in all of them....

For 23 of the bars, eating just an ounce a day would put an adult over a level that public health authorities and CR’s experts say may be harmful for at least one of those heavy metals. Five of the bars were above those levels for both cadmium and lead.

I read that. I don't really care because everything we consume has something in it that's not good for us at this point.

I would think like Kathsgrdn everything we eat or drink has something in it that is harmful. Since this area had coal mines both of those substances occur naturally in the soil and is taken up by everything grown in it. In the lead mining areas in the southwest of this state I would be more cautious about drinking the water.

That looks great Brandy. That is something like what I would like to do on the porch. We have a tiny little overhang on a 20 x 15 slab that would make a nice greenhouse/porch if the entire thing was covered and had some nice panels for plenty of sunlight but still protect us from rain. Still working on hubby, lol. That is a very cool sunlflower. No wonder you wanted to save seeds so bad. I would try it anyway. You never know I guess until you do.

So sorry to read of your loss...heartbreaking, for sure. I agree...your birds are 'sitting ducks', so to speak... hardware cloth AND screening are what you need, birds cannot escape from mosquitoes... wasps also like to build nests in aviaries (not to mention Africanized honeybees)...and beware of fire ants nesting nearby...they will get into their food and get them, too at night, even WITH screening. Snakes are good animals, but will eat birds/eggs, even in the wild. (A black racer has been devastating the mockingbird nests even before I find them...skin left behind.) Feral cats, oppossums and raccoons can also ravage your birds, chickens and other stationary animals. The Burmese albino (and other) pythons set loose in the wild are examples of non-native destructive animals which like bigger prey.

Lhylcn- sealing should ideally be done both by the fabricator in his shop, and again in your kitchen once installed. Most sealer manufacturers I've spoken to say there's no exact number or times it should be done, but it usually takes several applications until every part of the marble is sufficiently sealed. This is tested by letting water sit on the surface of the marble and making sure it beads up well rather than soaking right in. Honing is just a process that makes the marble "dull" rather than shiny. It's a personal preference. My Vermont Danby marble is very honed, very little sheen. Red- two things that have etched my marble instantly are tomatoes and lemon juice. I'd think ketchup would etch, too, being tomato-based. Etching, though, seems not to bother most marble owners, myself included. You can only see it in certain lights, and it's a part of the patina of the living stone. As far as staining, my counters are sealed with Porous Plus 511, and could easily handle ketchup sitting on them for awhile with no stains. I've had coffee droplets that splashed from the Keurig sit overnight and just wipe up the next morning. I have no stains at all. The counter have only been in for about 2 months or a little less, but I've cooked a lot in these months, have had house guests and hosted Easter at the house, no stains! That said, the Vermont Danby marbles are known for being less porous--and therefore a bit more stain-resistant--than many other marbles.

Luckily, I'm not a fan of dark chocolate, so I'm good!

I noted in the Cooking forum discussion that what I read read pointed out that there are chocolate manufacturers whose products were found to contain lower, dare I say, safer levels of these heavy metals, which shows it would be possible for others to do the same. Apparently, drying the cacao outdoors on the ground is what's contaminating it, so it's not a given that this is unavoidable.

There are a lot of business/manufacturing processes that are harmful. We do not need to just accept them.

I never bought into “the dark chocolate is good for you.”

If it is the drying on the ground that happens long before it reaches the manufacturer unless it is contracted for. Most are not contract growers.

Edited to add that the only reason there is less in other than dark chocolate is because there are more additives in the other cooking and eating forms.

I'm the one who posted the original post on the Cooking forum--OMG, I've been poisoning myself. I intend to be tested for lead and cadmium as soon as possible. Not that anything can be done about it.

Not panicking and not giving up chocolate. There are days I eat more than one ounce, but plenty of days I don't have any, so it balances out. To be super careful I might not give dark chocolate to young kids or pregnant women, but that's not me so bring it on!

Our bodies have the ability to cope with toxins, so all is not lost. Cadmium and lead are quite serious toxins tho and shouldn't be dismissed.

If it’s chocolate I usually like it. The very dark chocolate is a little too bitter to me.
