Flooring Design Dilemma

Flooring (engin wood or LVP) with Doug Fir cabinets -- colors?

I'm having such a hard time finding flooring for a whole-house renovation. Downstairs has straight-grain Douglas Fir cabinets (natural finish) in 3 rooms, so I'm focusing on downstairs, and upstairs can accept whatever I find for first floor. Probably engineered hardwood, smooth finish not distressed. I've been to 4 large flooring stores in L.A. but nothing has worked thus far.

Existing green-gray natural lino was great in its day but we want a wood look now, and something to carry throughout the first floor at least.

Garrison "Maple Syrup" https://www.garrisoncollection.com/product/maple-syrup-smooth is shown below in the first visualization but that's a LOT of red tone. (it looks better in reality)

Garrison "Maple Chestnut" is in the second visualization. (it also looks better in reality)

But what I really want is a "medium" tone like this project's Craftsman kitchen

That "medium" tone is going to come from a sand on site white oak hardwood floor. Your cabinetry is redder than your inspo. I just went through this with a client and a huge cherry kitchen. Dragged a hundred engineered in and out. We gave it up to sand on site, and put only a clear coat on. After trying at least seven stains.

Truthfully? This the WHY of why you see slate, and tile in cherry or any other species that leans red. It's the why of painted kitchens.....as flooring gets more difficult if you want wood throughout.

My client is coming back to paint his out next year - to a barely soft white, as there has been fading.....and he finally agreed he might love a brighter feel. After all the flooring of course in a whole house update.

For you? It depends how open to other areas, but I'd go select white oak, get it installed, try a few stains, and DON'T be shocked if you leave it natural with clear coat. : ) You're redder......

Upstairs need not match. Pick an engineered. Stairs? Match your first floor, add a runner.

Update - we looked at the three stores in our area (we are in the boondocks) that have flooring and do their own installation (been burned by Lowe's with their crappy installations on another project, so the chains are a "NO!"). Not one of the stores recommended laminates, and they had nothing but really cheap-looking ones in samples. I gave up and bought LVP. It'll work, and I'm sure, although I won't love it like I love my hardwood at my other house, I'll like it and it'll be easy care. After dragging home numerous samples, we finally settled on TruCor Blonde Oak. We need a light-colored floor in this house. We liked the sample better than anything else, it comes in 6' boards, and it doesn't have a whole lot of color variation. I'm going to request that as many of the darker and knotty boards as possible be saved for the closets. We had a good-sized sample board, and this is the manufacturer's view of the floor as a whole. This will be in adjoining and semi-open living/dining/kitchen/hall and in a bedroom - about 1000 sq. ft. in total.

[Note: The numbering used in this comment refer to the original post, as Hillcrest and Elgin Oak have swapped positions in the subsequent post of den photos.] #1 Elgin Oak has my vote, and here's why: I'm not a fan of the board stripes of #4, English Breakfast. (You want attention to be drawn out the windows to your lake view -- not to your floor's stripes.) #3 Fawn has a more uniform coloration than #4, but is a pinky brown, a fact which is accentuated next to the gray. #2 Hillcrest looks pinky brown next to the gray, too, wheras the gray just makes #1 Elgin Oak more golden. #1 Elgin Oak includes the Maple cabinetry's golden yellow in its coloration, and is the brightest option (if you are trying to keep the space light & bright). A previous poster asked about going darker with the flooring, and you may want to try that before making a selection. (Unless you already know you want a light floor.)

I just sent a message about our floors. I don't use Houzz much so I thought it was posting to this thread. I love these floors. For anyone considering these, I highly recommend. I'm expecting then to be durable but it's only been 2 weeks since professionally installed. They're gorgeous. Hard finish yet comfortable to walk on. I will post more pics once completed finished as we are in the process of finishing up baseboards and new doors.

My parents have a basic quality LVP in their small house and it looks nice. I don't think you notice the floor because they have it nicely decorated and other personal touches catch your attention first. They are happy with it for the most part. We went with pre-finished engineered wood floors in our custom build. We have 3 dogs so we chose one with a slight texture to hide scratches as much as possible. I do have some scratches at the back slider caused when the dogs see a critter outside and are desperate to get out the door. Two are 60 lb, fit, high energy dogs with high prey drive, so quite active. If we were going to let some scratches and patina bother us, we would have just used porcelain tile instead! This is our 4th house with wood floors, but the first with engineered. We went with a hard wax oil finish due to the fact that you can refresh the finish in specific areas and don't have to have the whole floor refinished. You need to only use the products recommended/sold by the manufacturer for cleaning, refreshing and oiling. You can spend hours reading debates between hard wax oil finish lovers and polyurethane finish lovers ... there seems to be little middle ground!
