Intros and blog announcement

Now that Bob is retired, he has time for something he has wanted to do for quite a while. He has started a blog, which now has several entries. He has been writing about various aspects of daylily growing--growing from seed, hybridizing, planting practices, white daylilies, etc. Check it out at cherryhillgarden.blogspot.com.

We finally have approval for our two new intros.

The first is Cantaloupe Capers. It is is a 6.5 inch flower on 38 inch scapes with 3 way branching and 15 buds. It is a mid-late, semi-evergreen tetraploid. It is Up Against the Sun X Carrots Forever. It will make a showy clump.

The second one is Last Train to Clarksville. It is a 5.5 inch flower on a 24 inch scape with 3 way branching and 14 buds. It is a late season tetraploid dormant.

Both of these are good garden varieties, making nice clumps as you can see from these photos.

Both of those intros look great at clump strength. Congrats on registering those! I'll take a look at Bob's blog later today.

Wow is Cantaloupe Capers a show stopper! Glad you got approval on that. The other one is nice too. I read the article on hybridizing with Fulva on Bob's blog. Most interesting. I am unable to log in with google to comment there for whatever reason [maybe my high security on my computer] but I can at least comment here.

I found it most interesting to see the various varieties you were able to get from first or second generation crosses, and that you can cross it with both diploids and tets. One thing the article didn't mention was the bud count. Is it high using fulva? While the ditch lilies are average in bud counts, I know some of the species daylilies have an amazing bud count. Perhaps you haven't tried those yet.

That is why I liked BEFORE. I HAVE a lot of those extra early small yellows and am tired of them. Wouldn't mind a really extra early that looked like a real daylily :-) But really I am looking for lates and extra lates and wished they had introductions in that catagory.

I am on a northern hybridizer kick. This year I ordered lots of evergreens and semi evergreens, many hybridized in florida. But I want hardy daylilies that I will not have to wory about so am ordering northern for spring. This way in the future I will be able to compair the performance of the one group with the other. Already ordered from Melanie Mason for spring delivery with her intros and some from Brian Culver. I am going to send in my order to Karol Emmerich ASAP, was waiting for the 2008 intros to make my finial choices. I know the order from Emmerich will be pricey but I also know they will be great performers so should be well worth it. I got Woman At The Well on the Lily Auction this past summer (late summer) so am hoping it blooms next year for me.

Hi Rita, Mary Jane is a fairly small hybridizer who's just been offering her limited number of intros on the Lily Auction. She's getting well-known regionally, but she's not well-known nationally. I have two of hers that I bought the year before last. They did not perform well last year because the weather/drought. But I think they have a lot of potential. Can't wait to see them next year! I love CORAL FANTASY and BRAVE NEW WORLD.. already talked to Bill and he assures me that there will be one of each that can make the trip to my garden. I agree with Ellie that they are tall - but they make a perfect back of the bed flower (next to the fence) and a great parent to coax some of these shorties to grow a little higher in future generations. I had the pleasure of talking to him at length several times during Mecca last year and the knowledge he shares is priceless. He is one of the friendliest people you will ever want to meet. What is the parentage of Last Train? How would you compare Cantaloupe Caper with parent Carrots? Let us know when your spring list is updated.

Mantis, the parentage of Last Train is Cactus Blossom X Never Too Late.

Cantaloupe Capers is taller than Carrots Forever. Its color is a softer shade--more melon than orange and it blooms a little earlier. One characteristic of Carrots is that it doesn't open real flat. Cantaloupe Capers doesn't seem to have this problem.
