i wouldn't worry too much about it, its just how they are. they'll have tons of flowers to improve the chances of getting pollenated. usually most of the flowers get pollenated, but the tree can't support that many fruit and it will drop quite a few of them. if the tree drops all of the fruit, then something may be wrong.

Hi Sisbear..I'd stop using the Stakes..they're the worse fertilizer known to man. Stakes only fertilize the area where they're inserted..Not the entire root ball. I'm not saying this is the reason your fruit are browning. I used citrus stakes once, on one tree..it died..It could have been coincidence, but since then I tossed the remaining stakes in the trash. Did you use the stakes about, oh, 7" long? Good luck, Toni Do youself a favor and buy regular Citrus Fertilizer. Dave - I would look at your indoor growing space with a critical eye and think about the following: IF you can provide really good citrus growing conditions (really good light, like a metal halide/high pressure sodium lamp, good humidity, air circulation) then your citrus will grow well year round and warmer temps are very beneficial. However, I, and most others, don't have these greenhouse-like conditions inside the home. If, on the other hand, you are growing with natural indoor light, or at most a fluorescent or two, then the light is really too dim to support decent growth. Warmer temps under dim light conditions encourge the tree to grow without the proper energy inputs. The result is usually leaf drop. By keeping temps cool, you encourage the tree to enter and stay in a semi-dormant state and you can make it to spring without losing too may leaves. Added bonus is that cooler temps automatically make your relative humidity higher. I also cut back on watering, as a semi-dormant tree doesn't need much water and the risk of root rot is higher. Anyway, this is how I think about the winter indoors. Anyone else with successful strategies in the frozen north?

Graham, That really stinks that you can't put it outside..I can imagine you wanting to for sure. You are trying your best. I would say you are getting the reverse effect of a lack of DIRECT sunlight. Is the sun way above the window at this angle giving that tree just sunlight, not direct sun? If anything, if that tree can hang on another month or two, which it just might as long as you watch your watering habits and that mix is porous, it will probably actively start growing once the sun dips below the top of your window and start shining directly in it as the sun angle lowers... That is exactly what use to happen to my sisters when she had to keep hers inside all summer. Please, keep us update, As long as the roots are ok, it might have a chance. I just hope the roots will survive long enough without leaves to help them along. Keeping my fingers crossed for ya.
