How are "mass-made" desert roses grafted?
Comments (4)Rock, What happens is that people will hybridize a couple plants. So for instance, they might have a nice yellow plant and a nice purple flowering plant. They will cross these two plants and plant up all the seeds. They will then watch these seedlings, grow them on to flowering and then select the ones that have things like, nice flower, good branching, numerous blooms and register the plant as a named plant. Then...they take cuttings from these named plants and graft these cuttings onto seedlings that were not selected as a prime plant that was worthy of registration. That is how we can purchase named varieties from select nurseries. As far as the mass quantity, they most likey just graft any cuttings that they have. That is why most plants are not labeled with a variety name by Lowes or Walmart. The grafting part of your question, I believe Marie supplied some good Youtube videos that demonstrate the procedure well....See MoreRotten Desert Rose/how to root desert rose cuttings
Comments (15)I have my desert rose in a clay pot.. I do not water it until it is dry about an inch down. And cut back on water in winter. It is in a south window and gets lots of light in the winter. It goes out on my covered front facing south after all chance of frost is over. It loses some leaves in winter. I have had it for three or four years. I took a cutting alert it dry out on the end put in spot of regular miracle grow potting soil and it has started putting on leaves.. I would love to try planting from seeds.. My cutting even got water logged and started to turn mushy on the end and I cut it off jammed it back in soil and it started leafing out again. I think over watering is what kills most cactus roses.. I also fertilize with mirical grow and alter with blooms fertilizer in summer....See MoreEnglish roses in the low desert?
Comments (7)I have an Austin bed, and Golden Celebration is one of the roses grown there. This area only receives sun from morning till about 2 p.m., and all of the roses are performing well. I grew Golden Celebration about 12 years ago in a western exposure, however it was in close proximity to a tree that filtered the sun and created some degree of shading. I second Pretty Jessica and Munstead Wood. I had a Munstead Wood growing in full sun throughout the past summer. It did not do much, but it did not die either. Another rose that handles heat well is Carding Mill. My climate is in between yours and Phoenix in terms of heat. As written above, mulch and drip irrigation set to water deeply is a must. Good Luck!! Lynn...See MoreAdenium desert rose losing its leaves?
Comments (6)Has the pot got drainage holes in it? Commercially bought cactus and succ mix can often be the death knell for Adeniums, ideally, it needs to be mixed with at least 50% perlite. Many of us Adenium growers use it in far less quantities than that. Some of us grow our plants in totally inorganic mixes. The peat content of a c/s mix holds onto too much water. A mix of equal parts of either horticultural grit/aquarium gravel/chicken grit, perlite and cactus mix is what I use. With watering your plant every few days you may well have started root rot problems. Advise you unpot, inspect the rootball and repot in a better mix.....and also check out the wealth of info on the Adenium forum here on Houzz. Two pumps of fertiliser a week......not sure what this equates too, please explain. Sounds like too much fert being used, is it water based.....so there's even more water being added????
