Comments (21)Thanks PG...very nice of you to say! Yes, I've only had this plant for 5 months. I attribute the blooms to our very cold winter here and must have triggered the blooms. I've had it on roofed but open entryway. I left it out there the whole time unless temps were predicted to get 33° or below. The person couldn't remember what the color was going to be so we were both waiting. Thanks again!...See MoreEaster Cactus! - Bloated cactus-like leaves?
Comments (3)I am not a cactus expert but from a plant grower and landscpaper I have an idea. Many genetic mutations will try to revert back to the natural form. My guess is that in nature an easter cactus would look like this offshoot and it is reverting. For me this kind of thing is nothing new I have seen this in several mutations and most commonly seen would be the needle point holly. It is a mutation that has only one point on the tip of the leaf. It will mutate back spontaniously and get the wild form of leaf. When that piece gets bigger I would break it off and keep it as a seprerate plant. I have a mutant canna variety that reverted back and I have been growing the revert as a new plant....See MoreChristmas (holiday?) Cactus propagation woes
Comments (5)Right, so, I've repotted them, in a 3:1 mix of "mini-rose soil", which is barky and dollar store cactus mix, which is perlite heavy. When I depotted them, it was clear that they didn't have new roots at all. It was just the same roots as they'd had, exactly as they'd been when I first potted them on from the water. So, we'll see I guess. Seems best time for propagating these thingies is around this springy time of year, not October/November as I tried to. At the end of the day, if they do fail, it's no biggy, because I can ask for another cutting and do it properly, no sweat. I just want to make sure I do what I can to correct my errors with these if I can. Anyhoo, thanks for all your help, everyone. I'll certainly update later!...See MoreStrange growths on pincushion cactus
Comments (4)Hi giwaffe, So far, the pot looks to be the right size. If you want to pot up, only go about an inch bigger. Your watering is another story. Your plant should be in a pot with a drainage hole, and your mix (at minimum) should be 50% cactus mix and 50% perlite. You want a mixture that is fast draining. Never water a cactus or succulent immediately after repotting/potting up....always wait about a week. Then, water thoroughly. This means water until you see it draining out the hole. Let the plant dry out then repeat. Terra cotta pots work best for this because they are porous and will allow the soil to dry out quicker. If you don't like the look of terra cotta, pot the plant up in one and then put that pot into a nicer container to catch the water. Just remember to empty the nicer pot.
