Rug Size for Corner Desk

We are putting new hardwood flooring into our home. One of our rooms is shown where we will have a L-shaped desk corner desk as well as a 3x3 table and two chairs centered to the window. I am trying to determine the right size area rug. Some rug size / placement guides say that a 4x4 rug is the right size with the rug positioned without the rug being underneath the front of the desk. But I am wondering if a larger rug would be appropriate. I am showing both using a furniture placement tool. There are two doors into this room...one to the right of the window and one where I am standing taking a picture of the room. Which rug size would work best, in your opinion? Thank you.

It would have to be larger, but the rug will not be great for rolling the chair you would then half to add a office matt on top of the rug I dont think the rug is needed. you could maybe put an abstract shape in the middle but I think you really need to wait for the furniture. with the traffic patterns etc I think a rug would just get in the way.

I don't like having a rug under my desk because chairs move more easily on wood floors. I also always put a plastic chair mat down to protect the floor. So I would approach this in a different way and put a rug under the two chairs opposite the desk. It looks like a 5 X 8 would work.

Is there going to be a lot of TV watching in this room? If so, I'm afraid you'll find the perpendicular sofa set-up to be sub-optimal at best. When we moved into our house last week I wanted to try a similar set-up (only one sofa, facing fireplace, TV on right-angle wall). It was incredibly uncomfortable for watching TV in any position that wasn't some form of lying down. So instead we're going with a layout that isn't as attractive, but is exponentially more functional. Back to rug size. We got a deal on an 8 x 10 rug, and I figured it would be plenty big. It turns put it's just about the right size, although the seating area for the TV is only about 70% of the room.

Thanks, desertsteph, I completely understand - its is almost a wall of cabinets. But the wall opposite this one has no upper cabinets and I have a 4ft tall by 9 foot wide window. So I think openness of the one wall will balance the heaviness of the other, plus, I want lots of storage =). I am just trying to get the biggest bang for my buck, and I don't have all my kitchen stuff here at this temporary home so it's hard to visualize where things will go or the best way it may fit.

Totally. Haven't moved furniture back up yet so I don't have a picture. Just didn't know if it's an odd choice to put a small circular rug under a desk chair under a larger desk--you know, like how it's standard advice to say to get a larger rug for your living room or one that fully fits your dining room chairs when they're pulled out from the table...I wanted to be sure I wouldn't be committing a design crime or something!

Thank you, RL! I will not be putting a rolling chair there. Just a regular chair. It is a long story why it won't be rolling but the chair I put there will be purely decorative to fill the space.

So you are putting a desk with a regular chair for decoration? IM really confused lol.

LOL, RL...we no longer have a desktop computer so there is nothing in that space. The unit is beautiful and has alot of cabinets, shelves and storage. So I want the chair to just be positioned there at the desk so that it doesn't look like a big hole there. We have had the corner desk many years.
