Turn on the lights, remove the clutter, and take more pics. Off the top of my head, new lighting, new paint, new backsplash and replace the white bar stools.

Hi maxee. You could start by going to houzz.com, lighting, and typing in flush mount or semi flush mount. After the photos come up, go to the left and hit "kitchen". You'll see lots of choices. Lumens, lamps.com, lightingdirect, overstock, shades of light, there are so many online sites for lighting. Just search under ceiling lights, honing in on flush mount. GL.

I like the light gray woodgrain floor that is shown above, and think either that or a good oak look would look great with blue lower cabinets, either navy or a lighter blue. Stainless appliances would also work well (and I am partial to SS), but if you keep the space predominantly white then white appliances are fine too. I would like to see less fussiness -- embellishments off the cabs, swap out the light kit on the fan for something simpler (assuming you want to keep the fan, do so if the room runs hot in summer), simpler floor, a less strong color on the walls -- and I do actually like the floor, just not completely with the current tile and tablecloth). Think really hard about saving up to redo the cabinets with Ikea instead of a partial makeover now, though. You would get better storage, and perhaps better function for your small space.

Your countertop is very earthy and no white anywhere in it. According to Maria Killam if your fixed elements don't have white or cream in them a cream may even end up looking too white. You then should consider a light beige or light gray neutral. Green beige - BM Manchester Tan, SW Wool Skein. It will look cream because the contrast between your earthy elements and the light green-beige is so high. If these green-beige neutrals don't work with your fixed elements, pick whatever neutral is the most obvious. In her ebook a kitchen she did years ago with this same granite she said the color she chose was too yellow (BM Mannequin Cream) and if she were going to redo it she would have went with a grayed white like BM AF-65 Fossil or green-beige like SW 7028 Incredible White or SW 6148 Wool Skein. ETA - I just noticed your flooring in the kitchen is light. I would paint the cabinets whatever light color relates to your hard finishes. I would honesty just pay for one of Maria's online consults and have her pick the color. I'm not affiliated in any way. I plan to use her when it comes time to painting my cabinets to save me from agonizing over buying samples and comparing undertones, etc. Then putting all the work into it and realizing I got it wrong, at least to my eye, visually. I would try and remove the scroll piece above the stove and if you could change any of the cabinet trim that would be a big visual improvement. And I'll admit I'd honestly paint right over the backsplash. I'm sure some will cringe but it can be done easy peasy. I'd paint it the same color as the new cabinet color. Clean well, gripping primer like Zinsser 123 (water based) or Zinsser BIN (oil based) and two coats of paint. I'd put money into replacing the trim on the cabinets over a splash. I would remove the valances but not sure what I would use there. Maybe woven or fabric roman shades.

The total cost was about $12k and we are in North Carolina. Keep in mind this includes things beyond the kitchen update (like refinishing all of hardwoods on first floor and hiring movers to move the furniture to the garage, etc.).

if you want to keep the strong contrast beween walls and ceiling I would invest in a ceiling recessed lighting plan...the contrast makes one notice the older fixtures. a good lighting plan is money well spent. I would add hardware to the cabinets. Beyond these things what kind of budgeted monies are you talking about ?? I like the oak cabs.

What is your budget to update? It is hard to help you when you provide NO INFORMATION OF WHAT YOU WANT AND WHAT YOU CAN DO.

Since you provided no budget nor guidelines, then I will suggest need new cabinets which meet the ceiling, replace the popcorn ceiling with smooth, install canned lights, new sink, faucet and appliances, new flooring. Price tag $30-50k depending on your choices.

1) Add cabinet hardware, stat.

2) Consider painting the dark walls a lighter shade.

3) Repaint the stools (and maybe the dining set) in a coordinating color - the bright white is very contrasty right now.

4) Maybe add a colorful rug or runner.

5) Keep the adorable Snowman and Furbaby photobomber :-)

Your floor is a very busy, strong pattern. To make those chairs work, you need a large rug under your dining set that has creams, taupes, tans, neutral colors is a soft, quiet pattern. Or even a plain rug. The mirrors have to go.

I installed led lights in my kitchen ceiling that look like can lights and they made a huge difference, not just in functionality but in updated appearance. Definitely make that change.

And the white chairs, mirror frames, etc really don't work with the dark tones throughout.

I love the wall color, so contemporary with the warm wood tones. I agree, the white furnishings are too farmhouse and too much of a different style. Paint the chairs, table and mirror frames to match the solid countertops.
