last yearHere is the bathroom as a reminder. One note: the mirror will be switched out for my "luggage medicine cabinet" shown below, when we convert the maid's room to my "pantry annex". They have similar dimensions but just an aesthetic fyi.

Comments (4)The main problem is that the glass is short on these fixtures. Most contemporary fixtures are designed to take halogens because that allows them to do very small glass areas. You may have to rethink the style. If you can use something a little bigger, you may want to check out Besa Lighting. I have used their sconces before and you can get a sconce for a regular lamp that will take a CFL, or you can get the sconce as a regular fluorescent. The main problem is that you will need to get a larger fixture. Some other names of manufacturers you may want to look at besides Sea Gull, which is very good, are Progress Lighting, Forecast Lighting, American Fluorescent. I like those lights you chose. what do you think of this type of adjustable light? i thought perhaps it might be functional in a vanity area. my daughter is still young , so it would be a while before she needs something for makeup though. but do you think it would it go?...See Moremtnrdredux_gw

last yearlast modified: last yearYes, it was in our basement bathroom in our first house and I have never liked it. I am not sure why it came with us! It was a place holder than just never got addressed.
We don't have any room for the towel bar anywhere. I do have antique milk glass towel bars on the front of my vanity at home and love them.
Jinx, I did find images of that style flanking a mirror. Not sure if they should face up or down. The junction boxes were placed 6' on center so prob down.

last yearI got these refurbished vintage porcelain sconces online; might have been on eBay, I can no longer remember - I didn’t find shades I liked, but I did find these porcelain bulbs on Etsy, and I like them a lot.

last yearAfter you confirm the wiring, you have to decide if that's where you will use the luggage mirror. I think you are smart to acknowledge that using it makes it even more important to tie together the natural tones in the armoire and the luggage mirror, you need a third warm element minimally. One possibility it to replace the shade on the window with natural shade. You could use the embellish it with green ribbon, or the fabric from the existing blind. However, with the luggage mirror you still might need lights with a little more visual weight that the small vintage porcelain ones. It's hard to say, the luggage mirror looks quite dark in the picture compared to the photo of the bathroom, but I am thinking a lot of that is lighting differences in the two shots and in reality it is softer and more mellow.
Anyway, I was thinking about rope, wood, pottery sconces. I have some sweet sconces from Georgetown pottery, the colors would look great in your bath. Kind of like this
I can image a hole drilled in a rectangular platter and that being the back of a wall light.
This has been a fun diversion from looking for my bedroom sconces LOL

last yearlast modified: last yearI feel like I am behind on my own thread! My fault for going to brunch; it is such a gorgeous sunny day I actually put down my laptop.
Sorry so long, executive summary in bold ital.
1. First and foremost, my starting presumption may be wrong. I do not think this wall has any wiring at all. I found old punch lists (c 2014) where i asked for wiring to be put in place on either side of the mirror at 6', then one from them saying, no it should be 66", then one saying "now that the wallpaper is in, you only get one chance to do it right so let's wait until you buy the fixtures." Contra-evidence: there is a switch on the wall to control them, and there was metal detected at 66" just next to the mirror on the right side. Supporting evidence - nothing found on the left, and IIRC unused electrical has to be covered with a plate. Emailed the GC to find out but I think we are starting de novo on wiring which is good because i *might *rather have just one light on top, IDK yet.
2. I forget how I came across the guy in Brooklyn but he had old suitcases he makes into various items, to order. I love mine and get tons of complements on it and it will need to be relocated from its current spot when I turn the maid's room into a pantry annex, albeit prob not for a few years but I want to plan for it. I don't know if it is "in or out;" 25 years ago I bought old alligator suitcases for decorative purposes. I think I told the story before that one year, DD1 came downstairs packed for French immersion summer carrying them! (yeah, no) I think the vintage suitcases were overdone at one point but I still like them. Also, i wanted to use the luggage medicine cabinet to balance the large armoire on the opposite side of the room which is otherwise the only caramel colored thing in the room. The armoire is newly located to that spot and is working well as a linen closet plus I love it, too. Before anyone goes anti-armoire on me, it's non negotiable.

3. As for the issue of the size of the medicine cabinet, i think we are ok. It is 16x26 and the existing mirror is 19x28. The sink is a good size, 26 wide by 22 deep. The medicine cabinet protrudes 8.5" from the wall. I was concerned about that too. However, we use it all the time over a smaller sink and it has never occurred to me that it was "in my face."
Also, in re lighting, I was very surprised to measure one of the sinks in our dressing room (below) and find that that cabinet sticks out 6" inches and the light extends 8". Last night, worried about this issue, i was all set to go with a gooseneck but I think we have some flexibility and it also matters how high, etc. Since I now think we are wiring from scratch, we can accommodate the lighting needs.
MBR dressing room and issue of the profile on a flush mount med cab vis a vis lighting. This set up below has worked perfectly fine. The cabinet is 6" deep and light extends 8". On this basis, if i did one sconce over top, I probably want to have one that extend at least 10.5" from the wall.
4. In re the suggestion to get rid of the window treatments and use wood blinds to have a third warm element. .. The WT, which are on two windows and also the shower curtain, are my absolute fave part of the room, and the Farrow and Ball wallpaper (hat tip Pal) and floral flooring were all chosen to support it. It is Nina Campbell's Perroquet and it one of my very rare forays into pattern. My girls especially love it. Much as I love wood blinds (see my dressing room above, the MBA, and our LR!), the Perroquet fabric is emphatically not going anywhere. I think I can add a third warm element with a tortoise tissue box or trashcan.
Meanwhile Local, you have me pining for yet a third set of plates, when i need -1 set of plates!
5. I went down a rabbit hole looking for a different mirror, in case, and found good options if needed ...either if I decided the luggage med cab won't work or just to use in the interim. Looking at caramel-ish wicker, bamboo, rattan, tortoise. I have found several things I like. I am going to try the luggage med cab in situ today and get a feel for it in the space. It is a fairly large bathroom so I don't think it will overwhelm.

Jinx the first one you showed, the jadeite metal from Etsy, with an opaline glass clamshell, would be great but won't extend enough if i use it overhead, I am not sure how well it would work with two flanking?

last yearMeantime, I like the luggage med cab in this bathroom. I think the colors and size work well. I will choose lights that I think can work with it, although in the interim I will have a different mirror there. I have a bid in on one.

last yearOkay, bid accepted. ($101!). I now have a placeholder mirror and can ditch the white wicker monstrosity. This one is a little on the small side, but that only means that when the day comes to replace it with my luggage medicine cabinet, I can easily find a home for this.
