building a deck above a shed roof

I have a small shed roof , 7' x 19', and want to put a deck, or balcony, above it. On the house side, I can attach a ledger board, but I'm not sure the best way to support the deck on the other side. Any suggestions?

Keep in mind sheds don't require permits, but decks do. Make sure your ledger board is bolted and/or attached per code, use full sized hangers for the joists & fill in all hanger holes with nails specified by the hanger.

Before using the shed as a support system, check the footing sizes which should be at a minimum 12" deep, 12x12 or 24x24 depending on soils, weight & height. A solid post 4x4 or 6x6 depending on height from footing to deck beam. Sketch it up & submit to the building department & they will tell you what's missing.

John, I had the exact same problem with my shed. I set up forms and POURED A CONCRETE RAMP. It goes right up to within an inch of the door jamb. I left that open to allow for air circulation so the wood would not rot. Once the ramp is set up, you can set/mortar stone or brick pavers over it. To make the forms, I ran string down from the doorway out to the ground at an angle I felt would be gradual enough to allow a safe run up into the doorway. Measure the angle where the string meets the ground, measure the lenght of the string. Be sure to allow for the height of the flagstone you want to set on top. Transfer the measurements to a piece of 1/2" plywood and cut the forms (2, one for each side). I anchored them by driving in wooden spikes to the outside and set another piece of plywood against the shed to allow for the 1 inch air gap. I removed only the grass and first inch of topsoil to prepare the ground, then laid in a layer of small stones/rocks that I gathered from around my property. It took me 6 bags of Quik Crete, which I mixed by hand in a wheelbarrow. It was work, but it wasn't really all that hard and the results are GREAT. I have a sturdy permanent ramp that isn't going anywhere and requires no maintenance. And if I take down or move the shed, I'll get somebody to whack it apart with a sledgehammer.

Because our old metal shed is losing its roof to rust and contained our garden amendments we decided to build a new wooden garden shed. We purchased a Costco kit (Costco is a members warehouse store with an online component as well as physical stores). They were having a sale on the 10ft by 8ft kit shed for $799 which would be drop shipped to our house. We began by preparing a spot next to our vegetable garden area. The site selected is not flat and that led to some complications, but our property slopes throughout its length so this section was really no different than anywhere else. We used pier blocks for the base with pressure treated 4x4's. We used closer spacing of the floor joists than was required. We laid the dance floor down (it became the main construction place.) The first wall was put up. Then the side walls were put together. Front wall pieces and first shelf put in. Roof joists were put up. Roof panels were screwed in. After the tar paper, the roof shingles were nailed in place. Doors were hung. A deck by the front door was constructed, and stairs done as well. Caulking of vents, solar panel for light was placed, and tools were hung up. Success was declared. The entire process working mostly on weekends took almost two months for two people who are amateurs in the building world. It is satisfying to have built it ourselves, and probably cost in the $1500 range when all was said and done.

Congratulations tinker1121 on the upcoming shed! Just a few quick comments for you to consider. Will you be preparing a concrete or cement pad for under the shed? (Stops a lot of bugs and termites.) Wooden DIY shed kits usually require additional materials (like shingles) and may not come with a floor kit. Vinyl sheds can be installed in a few hours but they may need to be anchored down if you live in a windy area. How will you run electricity to the shed and do you have any local codes that need to be met to do this? If you live in a snow zone - will the roof be able to withstand the weight of the snow? Will you install windows and a workbench or overhead loft storage space? And finally, will you need a permit or permission from the homeownerÃ¢ÂÂs association before you build the shed? Sorry to sound like your mom, but once you build the shed you will be amazed how you lived without one for so long! Best wishes and please tell us what you decided.

You could build you shed right on top of the concrete slab, just like they do with a house on a slab. You didn't say want you wanted to use this shed for but you might want to consider "the lay of the land". Sometimes when slabs are poured for sheds they aren't quit as high above grade as they should be. You don't want to find that the floor of your sheds ends up under water after a heavy rain. To connect the base plate of the wall to the concrete youÂd need to use an expansion type anchor. There are a couple of variations Â a wedge type and a sleeve type but they all do the same thing Â expand in the hole to make a secure connection to the concrete. Generally speaking things like powder actuated fasteners and "Tapcon" type screws arenÂt sufficient. A hammer drill makes drilling holes in concrete much easier. You can rent one for $20 or so. Any wood that comes in contact with the concrete must be pressure treated. IÂd also run a heavy bead of construction adhesive under the wall base plate to form a seal. A "jack hammer" is generally used for destruction, not construction. You didnÂt mention anything about permits. Many communities require permits for this kind of construction and you local building department can be a useful resource if youÂre less than sure of your carpentry skills. Certainly the inspector isnÂt going to help you drive nails but he can make sure you donÂt get into too much trouble. Good luck! Mike

Is it a 'shed roof' that extends from the house, or is it a roof of a shed that will be beneath the new deck?

like your first picture. The outer wall is 2x6 and I can do whatever is needed inside to beef up the wall/roof as required.

If the orignal foundation meets the current building code, the loading shouldn't be an issue, however, there is unlukely to be a record of the footing design so you might need to expose it.

The hard part is maintaining a waterproof roof. Anything perpendicular to the roof slope will be a problem.

What is the climate/location and the structure and the slope of the roof and what is the roofing? Is the roof insulated?
