Blooming in the greenhouse

It's rather rare for us to have a daylily blooming at this time in the greenhouse. Most wait until late winter to do so. Here is the seedling known as Kaskel's Best Edge blooming on Saturday. Of course, some pollen was put on it.

We have grown Tom Adams for several years. We originally had it in the ground, but it does not like our climate. It survived but only barely. I absolutely love the flower so we decided to try to hybridize one with a similar color, but hardier. We dug it up and put it in the small greenhouse we have. We will freeze its pollen and use it this summer. We put the pollen of Purple Peek-a-boo on this flower.

I'm on the fence about teeth, but, from what I've seen, Dr. Stump has such an orderly arrangement of teeth that it has always intrigued me. More like fringe then teeth. Your picture is a good example of why I find it interesting..... I can remember it going on the auction and reaching astronomical prices when it first came out. The lack of vigor bothers me though. I spent too much on a daylily a few years back (for my wallet anyway) and it's grown backwards ever since. It typifies what a plant without vigor can do. I hope you come up with some interesting, but more vigorous crosses. That fringe is unique and I appreciate the heads up on its growing habit...........Maryl

Nancy , you seem knowledgeable about bromeliads. Here is mine, it has a drooping flower stalk. Do you think it might be a Billbergia ? I was given it by friend who just said it was a bromeliad. If I recall the plant bloom is pink like in your picture . I have one lonely little geranium I brought in last fall in bloom presently. It has put out 3 bloom stalks , this one is the last of them , one stalk broke so I am trying to root in water . I am also trying to root some plumbago. Never had much luck doing it before so this time I am trying some in soil and some in water. The mother plant is to the right of the geranium in this picture . Then there there are spider plants and some wisteria I am trying to root in water ( not much luck with these) and some purple wandering Jew type plants too. I also have a whack of dayliiles in pots in the windowsills here ......they were tiny divisions of plants I moved last fall that were so overgrown these plantlets were unable to do anything . Too tiny to plant out (they wouldn't survive our winters here) so are in pots all over the place .....trying to keep them going until I can put them outside. Love the bright colors of your bromeliads Nancy ! Thanks for sharing .

Be still my heart. I adore pink daylilies with large yellow edges. This looks more lavender pink, but who knows what it will be like outside in the sun. I look forward to seeing how it progresses for you...............Maryl

Kaskel's Best Edge is very pretty. I wonder why Kaskel didn't introduce it. Does it have low bud count? I know Trimmer got some pretty intros out of it.

"Matthew {Kaskel} liked the flower of the daylily but didn’t care for the plant habit because it had a short scape and a low bud count.
I remember John Benz and asking me about the daylily. I had said 'John it’s a 500.00 dollar daylily on a fifty cent scape.'"

Mantis, that's an apt observation about Best Edge. That made us wonder what would happen if we crossed it with the most vigorous and tallest tets (Sonoran Desert Rose, Puerto Rican Fence Climbers, Chew Mailpouch Tobacco, Impassioned) in the garden. We will save some pollen for next summer.

Just out of curiosity, how did it open? There are lots of those big edges, but the secret is getting them to open without hanging up...............Maryl
