@jessicabaskerville, Given the extra ceiling height, your open area plan, and overall island size I suggest using 3 pendants of the size you're currently considering. See attached image for approximate layout. Keep the height so anyone standing at the island can see through to other spaces un-obstructed by the base of the pendants. The island pendants should be on a separate dimmer for better overall control of kitchen lighting. Also, be careful of your bulb choice since bare bulbs will produce some glare (another reason to use a separate dimmer). Please post pics when your project is completed.

I think the size of your island is too small to support three pendants. You could possibly do one or two. dining light fixture optional. I don't really think it will look bad if you had three separate hanging fixtures either, but it is a matter of preference. I personally like when different functional spaces are demarcated by different focal points. Layered lights (recessed + pendants + sconces + ambient wall lights) gives better results IMO but if your space is smaller you can opt to keep it simple. At 10 feet you will likely need a task light over the island. There are some very minimalist linear suspension LED task lights that might do the trick.

Those seem on the larger side and given the size of the island, I would lean towards two. Three could potentially seem crowded. Given the three bulbs in each, you should also have sufficient light with two. To get an idea of size, use cardboard to mock up the rough dimensions of the lights and you can place them over the island space and get a rough idea of how they would feel size wise.

We have some great advice for choosing, spacing and hanging pendants! Because your island will be about 10 feet long, you could try using 3 pendants. The human brain tends to enjoy seeing things grouped in trios and your island's length will support hanging 3 pendants evenly spaced. (We recommend spacing the pendants about 2 feet apart.) All three of the options you listed can work with your island's width. (You can find the ideal maximum size of pendant lights by taking your island's width in inches and subtracting 12. That gives you 30.) We recommend hanging the pendants 28 to 34 inches above the island. I am somewhat concerned that the globe style ones could be too tall, considering both the hanging height we recommend and the height of your ceiling. The lantern style ones, whether your first or second choice, may be a better option. Let me know if you have any questions!

Not sure why you are lighting bookshelves, but I’d keep it minimal. Too many just look busy.

It may depend on what you display on the shelves and how many shelves you ultimately keep. My opinion on the picture lights themselves is with your inset trimwork for the window seat area, high base cabinets, 5 shelves, shuttered window, and dead space ends against the side walls, is those fixtures would be too busy.

I'd probably key in on having lighting for the window seat. Best there with a recessed can. So I would probably use recessed cans over the bookshelves as well and not have the fixture attract attention.

What are you putting on the shelves ? IMO this should be plannned before building the cabinets . So now please tell us a bit more about the plan.That window seat seems very low to me so I porbably would not use it as one. I think we also need to see your style in the space .
