marble countertop owners...to hone or not to hone
Comments (10)rubyvine, before I sealed my honed marble, it was indeed like a sponge ... water soaked right in! I sealed it myself with 511 Impregnator available from Home Depot ... easy process: spray on, rub in and wipe excess off. Now water and other liquids stay on the surface. I've spilled all kinds of stuff on it: coffee, tomato sauce, soy sauce ... some of the drips sat overnight ... and no stains. I can't urge you strongly enough to get a good sized sample of the honed marble, seal it and then abuse it. Drip some lemon juice on it so that you'll know what etching looks like and whether or not you can tolerate it. Good luck! Comments (1)I found Akemi works awesome on my Montclair danby. I used 511 but didn’t feel it gave me same protection. I don’t have any staining and even etching if I wipe it right away. If I don’t notice that my kids spilled lemonade 😆 I’ll have some etching. But little comet with green scratch gets rid of it right away. I always put a sealer again. I love my danby because of it. Etching bothers me on marble and that’s the reason I picked danby so I can clean it....See MoreValentino Dolomite Honed Marble Sealing
Comments (10)I am not trying to be harsh, but if you are not OK with marble etching from lemon juice, wine, vinegar, etc., you should not spend $8000 on marble for your kitchen. Get another stone, one that will not be formed from calcium carbonate, which is why marble intrinsically will etch - it's the calcium carbonate makeup. No sealant that you could apply yourself will protect from etching marble. It will only protect from staining. If the sealing quote you got is $3800, then it is likely an application of a special layer on top of the marble. Those cannot be applied by a homeowner. Be aware that type of sealant will disguise the beauty of the marble, dulling its luminescence and depth. And you will be able to see the layer edge of that type of seal on the edging of the counters....See MoreNew calacatta light honed marble counter and backsplash. Need advice
Comments (0)The counter has an expensive anti-etch treatment to protect it. The backsplash is sealed, but doesn't have the anti-etch treatment because that process can't be done on verticle services. Does the backsplash need anything else done to protect it? I worry about spatters from the stove, etc. Thanks in advance for advice....See Morela_la Girl
