Where to buy Pumice
Comments (11)Thanks guys! Well my little seedling arrived in the mail today from the states, and I had no choice at the moment but to plant in 5 parts perlite, 4 parts cactus soil, and 1 part sand. It's all I could find! I won't water this little dude for a couple of weeks. He does have some strong roots but will keep an eye on him. I do know about Al's gritty mix and in fact found a dealer here in Saskatoon for Turface. The grit though, grani grit, or cherry grit or whatever it's called is the hard part. Fir bark is easy to find at the petstore for reptiles, and then of course having to sift it is a chore. I eventually want to replace all my plants with Al's gritty mix but for now it's not feasable. I hope putting in a bit of sand is going to help, with the perlite. My other succulents and cactus are in a 50/50 mix of cactus soil and perlite....See MoreWhere to get horticultural pumice in western Washington
Comments (7)I've gotten the large bags with no labeling at Indoor Sun Shop in Fremont. Vastly cheaper than those little nursery bags. You could also try other specialty hydroponics type outfits. I can't remember the name of the one in Shoreline on 175th near 15th Ave, but they had rows of pallets of soils & amendments. Also try asking the greenhouse manager at the UW Dept of Biology. They order it by the truckload. I think he said it was from somewhere in Tacoma. They don't have any interest in reselling you little bags, so they're likely one of the few places willing to reveal a wholesale source. If you do find a good source to buy it bulk would you post it back on here? I'm running low myself. Thanks. - Tom...See MoreWhere to buy more pumice for Worm Factory
Comments (20)wriggler: Time is your friend here. After making the pile either make several more piles or do something fun for 15 minutes. Then when you begin brushing off the top of the pile it should be devoid of worms. Also setting the worm pile on something where the harvest of vermicompost can be brushed off right into a waiting container helps make the job easier. I sometimes sit on on 5 gallon pail upturned. Place a second pail in front of me. Then a piece of cardboard holds the pile of worm rich vermicompost. Every 15 minutes I brush a layer of vermicompost off the cardboard into the bin. The cardboard half covers the pail so it is easily captured. Possibly an inch each time is removed. Others will probably chime in with inventive and easy methods they have worked out. Most of us age our harvested vermicompost. Why? Possibly because most is used in the spring. It helps finish it. Plus all the eggs hatch and the babies are harvest the same as the adults. This is before they are old enough to have laid eggs....See MorePumice and Coco Coir, Discoloured Pumice, Haworthia Watering Questions
Comments (23)I think the drying times that you calculated with the pumice will be detrimental only if you water the plant/pumice while it is still wet. Beyond that, I think you may be over-thinking this and over-worrying. I get 1/8" pumice from General Pumice Products here in the U.S. I just sifted and washed a bucketful over the weekend. It is drying in big oil pans outside -- and right now, it's really cold here in SW Florida. I don't think it will be fully dry until Thursday, and that will be 5 days. Chris is right -- use unglazed terra cotta pots if you can. Even with pumice, they will remain lightweight. Haworthias in pumice shouldn't need to be watered more than once a week, unless you live in hot southern Florida in the summer. Even then, mine only get watered about every 5 days. You don't HAVE TO water a Haw the very minute its mix is dry. You can wait a day or so and it will be fine....See Morepopmama (Colorado, USDA z5)
