Yes, I don't have any facilities for fussy plants. They all go outside, they all come in. Plants at ease in the conditions I have are what I prefer, and Philo genus offers ample opportunity to fill a house with various pretty leaves. I wouldn't enjoy a plant that couldn't grow well here. Apparently I'm one of the unlucky few sensitive (or have developed sensitivity) to the alkaloids in some Philodendrons. Heart-leaf vine gives me a rash if I get the sap on me. I haven't experimented with other Philos, but now operating under the assumption that all will give me a rash if I get their sap on me. So that would be one thing to not like, but if I eliminated all of the plants I have that I'm allergic to, that would be a lot of them, definitely not just Philos. Knowing about it, I can just avoid exposure to sap when trimming/propagating. Just touching the unbroken leaves or stems is harmless, but washing right away after contacting the sap doesn't seem to avoid getting a rash. I don't think this should prevent anyone from being able to enjoy these plants if they find them appealing, as long as caution is taken for sensitive individuals to avoid touching the sap.

*S* actually, that's not much at all. I prolly use more energy makin' coffee in the morning than that bulb uses all day. I have a bunch in the "dining room" happily growing under a 250 watt high-pressure sodium bulb.. Last year I lit an entire room with a thousand watt hallide.. Then I recieved the electric bill. 16 KWH a day from one bulb is not a good financial plan for the lowly passiflora grower.. Now if I could only break the code on supplying the 90 year old glaucoma patients their "fix" legally.. That would be a whole different story. I wonder how they do it? I mean even if they have a "growing permit", some folks just cannot do it. Seems like someone should be allowed to for them, right? There *HAS* to be a legal way to do it. Oh well. A quandary for another day.

I would say that it's a Monstera deliciosa too. Which some call a "Split-Leaf Philodendron." Even though it's not actually a philodendron at all, but a close relative. Mine was a juvenile when I first bought it, with only a few newer leaves having one split in them. These plants are native to the rainforest and climb up the sides of trees in search for brighter light. So don't be afraid to water them and give them more sunlight. That's why it's leaning so far to one side, in search of more sunlight. I place mine outdoors where it gets some direct sunlight in the mornings and evenings, but gets dappled sunlight/shade during the afternoons. I have it in a fast draining soil that doesn't hold on to a lot of water. So I keep it pretty well watered and don't let it dry out. Tho, when I bring it back indoors for the cold months, I cut back on watering somewhat, letting it dry out a little before watering it again. Here where I live in Arkansas, we have been constantly getting rained on, and rained on, and rained on, over and over all Spring long (sorry California), and my plants have been loving it. Here is a photo of mine that I took last year after repotting it. It has since began growing much larger leaves on it more than double the size in the photo. Which are still fairly small in comparison to how huge they can truly get. They don't call them monsters for no good reason, haha! Easily one of my favorite plants. :)

Massey516, self heading philos are usually very large landscape aroids with thick trunks to 4 or 5 inches in diameter. The most common self header is selloum aka bipinnatifidum, they're everywhere in landscapes here in Florida. True self headers grow upright until they get too top heavy and droop over, only to try and grow upright again. They grow long, thick, straight aerial roots at a downward angle from the trunk that root in several feet away to anchor the plant against heavy winds and from tipping over. Philos like Prince of Orange are called semi-self headers, which are smaller plants with short, thick stems that produce leaves fairly thickly within a shorter length than vining types. A big semi-self header with multiple heads can grow to several feet across, usually much wider than they are tall. Other semi-self headers I can think of right now are Prince of Red, Autumn, and the gorgeous McColley's Finale with deep red new leaves. McColley's wife patented one in 1988 she called Baron but I've never seen it. I have a very large semi-self header that I collected as Big Red but is probably Week's Red Hybrid, 'wingspan' on it can be 4 or 5 feet or more. Your 'Silver' philodendron is actually Scindapsus pictus. There are a couple of forms out there, one has more silver variegation than the other. The common 'Pothos' used to be in Scindapsus but has been moved to Epipremnum. I don't think pictus was moved but could be wrong. Your Philo scandens variegata shows about as much variegation as I've seen on these. While new leaves have bright variegation, mine tend to lose it as leaves get older. Glasshouse is behind on their species names, scandens has been changed to hederaceum. Prior to scandens it was P. oxycardium, the 'name experts' keep changing it. Some experts consider your micans a variety of hederaceum rather than a species. I'm very interested in your species Philo hoffmannii, that's a new one to me. I'm pretty sure your green leaved philo with red stems is not the same as Tiffany's darker, reddish-leaved philo in her mixed pot. Besides the color difference, note that your leaves are narrower and more lance shaped. I think yours is a beautiful old hybrid called Red Emerald, like many other vining hybrid philos it has the species P. erubescens in it's genes. Jamilashaw, how does your Super Atom grow? I bought a few a couple of years ago, think I'm down to two right now. I find it very, very slow and a picky grower. I keep changing soil mix and growing conditions hoping they'll take off but haven't found what it wants yet. I've heard it's a true self header but a miniature. Russ
