A question about iPhones

My iPhone battery doesn't last at all if I used it for just a short time, and I mean short. Have you had this problem and what can I do other than getting a new phone?

The vast majority of those aren't actually running in the background, they're just suspended on stand-by and are using no power. Closing them doesn't save you any battery power.

How old is the phone and how often do you charge it? Was it new when you bought it? While you've owned it, have you been careful to not let it run down too far before charging?

You may need a new battery. Mine last about a year.

I have a Canon camera with Wifi too. I've never turned it on, it's a capability that's not of value to me. I find photos easy to unload by either using a USB cord (one of the standard sizes, any one works) or from the card, which I swap out anyway and access when removing the battery to charge. I've shared my view before, I think Win 10 is really not different at all from prior versions. It acts the same, it looks the same (since they changed the tile view, though that was always easy to avoid by using one of the simple add-ons like Classic Shell or Power 8). It's maybe a bit better in recovering resources and a bit more stable. Otherwise, very similar to its predecessors.

I got one of the early Android phones, when first on the market 10 years ago, and Oh how liberating I found it compared to the Blackberry I had to use for work. I won't drink the Apple Kool-Aid. They've been ripping off their customers for too long, selling more sizzle than steak at higher prices than comparable alternative products. Smartphone hardware of any denomination is all pretty solid, it's the software and UIs that vary. I don't like the user experiences of Apple products, too rigid and inflexible. Well integrated but unable to offer alternatives many times. Give me my PC and Android phone and tablets any day!

I have all the same iphone problems as listed. On my macbook, which I use most often for this site, if I try to copy text (like to quote someone) and paste it into a new reply, I get an error message. That is in firefox, but if I go to chrome it will work. In firefox, if i type a comment, I cannot get any paragraphs using the return key; if I try to edit or sometimes if I try to add photos, the whole comment will disappear. VERY frustrating. I cannot bold or underline text in firefox, so have to remember to switch to chrome (which I really dislike using). The wonkiness of predictive text on my iphone is the worst, because if you are used to using it, it's so automatic that I don't notice I'm using it. Then when I proofread my text before posting, it's all mumbo jumbo.

Be sure you dont have too many apps open at once. That will even make the phone feel,warm. If the phone is a few years old, it may need a new attery, as peacceofmind suggests. My ancient ipad sdoes not hold a charge very long but it is 12 years old. Imdo have a newer one.

How short do you mean by "short", and how old is it? Go to Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health, and click on it to see what your battery's maximum capacity is, and whether or not they recommend service. Also, be sure to toggle "optimized battery charging" on.

There are lots of tips for conserving battery use, like not searching for WiFi signals when you're using cell phone service, but using a WiFi signal when one is available. Also, decreasing screen brightness (use the Auto feature), and turning off services you don't use (turn off Location service for most apps, turn off Bluetooth unless you're using it, etc). Leaving apps open doesn't drain your battery, unless they are apps that refresh themselves: you can see which they are in the Battery section: Go to Settings, then Battery, then scroll down to see which apps are using most of your battery power. Most aren't, even if they're still open.

The Phone was bought Jan 2019, Battery health 86% max capacity. If I get on Facebook, It will last about 5 min and it's at maybe 50% or less. When using Bluetooth its plugged in. all things in battery are turned off.

When you double click the ”Home” button, how many things are stacked up? They are what are running in the background. To truly shut them off, slide them up and out of the screen.

Apple can change the battery for you.

Not certain what it is called but when I activate mine and then flip to the very first screen at the bottom is a small graft that shows how much time I spent on the various apps. You might look there to see what shows the most time.

If it is only charged to 86% and lose 30% in 5 minutes perhaps charging to 100% then seeing how fast it drops. It may also be that the time spent is longer than you think you were on fb. I can start reading what friends and groups I am on while drinking a cup of coffee only to realize I have drunk the whole cup and time has passed.

My old phone was doing that and a few other rouge things. I ended up with a new phone.

One thing that seemed to help was to let the battery completely discharge and then charge it up and let it completely discharge and do that a few times. Did it help? It seemed to.

Perhaps someone with more expertise could comment on this.

Mine did that thing where it went empty pretty darned fast and it would not discharge down to zero.

What iPhone is it? My husband has an older (iPhone 8 - abt 2018) iPhone, uses it constantly, and still has long battery life. Long meaning at least 32 hours. Go into your Settings -> General for your iPhone information.

I have the 6s iPhone I charge it every night and when it gets low. Sometimes 3 times a day If i use it much.

There are articles that can be found via search with tips on how to have long phone battery life. One of the common tips typically found is to NOT charge a phone overnight. I saw an Apple piece recently that said they recommend not charging much beyond 90%, to lengthen battery life. When you charge overnight, that will get to 100% and the experts seem to say that's too high.

The most effective charging cycle is to stay between 20% and 80%. The same for electric cars, which also run on a lithium battery.

joann_fl, the iPhone 6s is a very old phone, so I'm not surprised the battery isn't holding much of a charge anymore with heavy use. It's probably worth the $50 or so to get a new battery.

It is if you're using Facebook, which is a big drain on its resources. It would be different if all you used it for was to call, text, and take photos on.
