kitchen vent make-up air advice needed please (cross post)
Comments (73)So you have the Broan 6" MD6T and you have it unfiltered, unconditioned, and ouputting under the fridge for conditioning purposes? So you are relying on the exhaust heat of the fridge to cool the incoming air? How cold did it get this past winter for you? How cold was that make up air? Detectable at all? Here we had -20 real feel in NY with the wind chill at times. It was brutally cold and cold often. I think I might have to put in a heated MUA. So update on Broan. The lady I spoke to today was completely useless. To make a long story short she had absolutely no idea how to use the Make Up Air Specifier on her site. It was quite pathetic and my impressions of Broan's customer service = suck. I spoke to Dean at Electro Industries at length about all the factors I'm thinking about. We went over two options - one using the MA-10 (10kw all in one 10" heater with damper, blower, filter, and current detector to control blower speed) and the less expensive heater unit EM-WX1025R. The broan MD6T comes with a 24volt 20VA transformer so I could then use the one signal to turn on both the Broan damper and the heater unit. Both options unit can accomodate up to 637cfm in a 50 degree temperature rise. It's a 10kW unit though and would require a 50A or 60A two pole (240V) breaker and its own dedicated lines (of course). I can take care of the electrical so no problem there but man I'm guessing my heating bill (which was astronimical last year) will be more than I can tolerate this year. Temperature Rise Needed/CFM EM-WX1025R 10000 Watts 80/395 70/452 60/527 50/632 40/790 30/1054 MA-10 $1917 + freight EM-WX1025R $800 + freight. I think that should be sufficient - it's better to have 50 degree air coming in than 0 degree air. I'm thinking that maybe I can get away with non-heated air if I can get fresh air to come up that old supply register near the range. The opening is closer than the fireplace but it might work if I put a blower in-line as well....See MoreMake up air for kitchen reno
Comments (1)You have a fresh air duct installed. Not sure if the 'box' it is attached to has any type of damper and control. Some installers just put a small duct to maintain positive pressure on the hose, but you could have a motorized damper installed at the box w/ some sore of fresh air cycler (run time, humidity, temp). I would probably verify I needed MUA. Maybe a kitchen forum. Hood vents usually only run for a short period of time, and some homes are not all that tight to begin with. In extreme cases, your hood vent could draw through a chimney or if your water heater is in the closet, it could draw from the flue....See MoreAir Make up for high CFM kitchen Exhaust
Comments (13)Thanks for the comment. It's a 10" duct and the blower is inline remote with a muffler. It's all on the exterior of the house past 10" thick ICF walls. The blower itself will be suspended by porch rafters to reduce vibration transmission and the porch rafters are tied to the house with a ledger board on the exterior of the ICF so there's little to no vibration transmission into the house. The inspector is requiring a 10" MUA duct. I know that at full blast, it's not going to be whisper quiet, and I'm only expecting to use it full blast in rare occasions, but we do want the option for that many CFMs. As I mentioned above, the range top is 48" with four burners, a char-broiler, and a griddle for a total output of 111000 btu. I doubt we'll ever use everything full blast at one time but my biggest concern is smoke from the char-broiler and grease/oils from the Chinese cooking I frequently do. The MUA will come through the toe kick of the range top base cabinet so it helps create an air curtain to pull out smoke/grease/oil. Believe me, I have the same concerns about cold/hot air in the MUA, but to achieve the worst case scenario for cooking containment, we need to look at corresponding CFMs. I'll have to see how the controls open the MUA damper. I wonder if it's the case where the damper only opens over 500 CFMs, but I would imagine that with our tight house construction, we might not want that....See MoreCost to add a make-up air system for kitchen?
Comments (65)We've got all the intake and exhaust ducting done. Waiting on him to come back out so we can do all the wiring/testing/adjusting. The intake is shown above. This connects into the 14" return duct. I took out the Honeywell controller. On the "Off" position, it says "remote switch only". This is awesome and actually answers my question without having to look in the instructions. "On" can be used from Mar-June and from October to November-ish and will act as a Fresh Air system, given the balancing adjustments are made and such from the HVAC guy. "Off" can be used for the extreme months. Even in "Off" position, it will STILL open after we hook up a switch from the range hood to the damper. This is great news. Basically, "Off" is make-up air only, and "On" will be fresh air AND make-up air. The only thing that will deserve some extra credit is if we can wire it in a way for the Honeywell switch to ignore if it's on low speed. Not a big deal though. I thought of one awesome benefit that I didn't think about for make-up air. I have a small theater room that gets warmer than most rooms. We installed a jumper duct to the hallway where the main return is. That works great, as long as air handler is on. And it works "OK" at best. But with the fresh air system, this should help regulate the theater room temps in this situation which happens a lot: 6:00PM. Outside is 66-69F after the end of a pretty hot day. House T-stat is 71F. Theater room is 74-75F. Before the fresh air system, the only way to cool this room down would be to turn on the A/C. This increases the chance of freezing and is not really solving the problem. But I'm thinking now with the fresh air systems kicking on at usual intervals, blowing in 66-69F air from the outside should help reduce theater room temperatures and at least provide more air flow....See Morekaseki
