Comments (26)Maria - You must be very proud of both your daughters! Two of my three children are severely ADD, and I know how difficult it is to find teachers that are truly dedicated to their profession. We were told, over and over, that our children needed medication to control the ADD. All they really needed were teachers with a bit of patience and understanding. The medications have too many side effects, and we didn't want two little zombies that sat and stared. We put all three of our kids in a different school, and thanks to the wonderful teachers there, all of them flourished and learned... I hope there is a special place in Heaven for really dedicated teachers! I know it's a thankless job at times, and most don't make enough money for what they do. Instead of all the medications, we gave our ADD children the occasional cup of coffee or can of Mt. Dew to calm them down... and as they got older, we taught them to control the ADD on their own... my husband is still severely ADD, and he controls it with coffee and what martial arts training taught him. My children all are grown now, and all are doing well. They made it through their youth with help from a few really great teachers! Elizabeth - If you're half the teacher that the ones we had for our children were, then you deserve a lot of credit! I hope your students, and their parents, realize how lucky they are to have you! I hope the impending storms are not that severe, and you and your yard come through just fine! The forecast here is calling for lots of rain and bad weather in the coming days. We do need a bit of rain, though......See MorePregnant female?
Comments (10)I have been watching birds nesting for years, as have many of you, I'm sure. They build the nest, they mate, the sperm is held in a special place inside the female until one egg is released and the egg is fertilized, It continues developing for one day, passing through various stages until the shell is formed and the egg is laid. This process happens for each egg, one at a time, one a day. Of course I'm more familiar with other birds, not hummingbirds, but I don't think I've noticed that the bird looks pregnant during this process. Unless anyone knows differently I think this happens for all birds in the same way....See MoreFemale Emotionally Invested in Soapstone ISO An Answer
Comments (13)M. Teixiera imports a large volume of all soapstone quarried in Brazil, and some from India. They ONLY do soapstone -- no other materials, so I think they really know the stone and its qualities. They don't mention sealing the ss, but they will charge $15 bucks for the mongo bottle of mineral oil that they leave for oiling. Your installer might be a johnnny-come lately to soapstone, a granite guy trying to diversify, and that might be where the sealing prejudice comes in. That said, is there any problem with sealing? Probably not, except you wouldn't have the option of letting your soapstone patina naturally, or have the option of going "naked" for a different look. I actually like the many moods of my soapstone, rustic and textured and interestingly chalky charcoal when unoiled, dramatic and veiny and black and sophisticated when oiled. The question for you is, is there another soapstone supplier in your area that has more experience/confidence with the stone? I only ask because the treatment of soapstone seams, edges, etc. seems to be pretty particular to ss, as compared to granite....See MoreKatsura - any advantages of female or of male? Do I need both?
Comments (39)They aren't mine - they grow on the campus where I work. As you can see the "fruit" is tiny and it's a dry capsule I believe, so doesn't seem to create any visible mess, just changes the look of the bare branches in winter. Until I took a good look at them one day when they were leafless, they were indistinguishable. In fall the color and scent are lovely, and they are attractive trees but not spectacular the rest of the year. I am more fond of the weeping forms and would choose one of them for my own yard. I prefer the clean look of the males, but if you prefer the female winter look, check to see if any of the smaller forms are female. I don't think it should be as important as the size and form, however....See MoreElmer J Fudd
