I just texted this to some of my friends. This lady was only 49 years old and she had cardiac arrest??!! That’s awful.

Julie Powell wrote the book that the movie was based on. Amy Adams portrayed her in the movie.

DeeMarie - PITTSBURGH!! PIRATES!! That is soooooooo close to me. Maybe one of these days you could tag along and we could meet for lunch. I have yet to meet a fellow SS Daily pal. :Speaking of Luna Bars, I always have a stash of them on hand. A Luna Bar and a piece of fruit make a great lunch/snack on the run. My favorite flavors are Dulce de Leche and Lemon Zest. I ran errands all afternoon and grabbed a Lemon Zest bar when I got home to tide me over until dinner. My third bite tasted like PURE SALT! I almost got sick. Couldn't bring myself to find out if the rest of the bar was as salty as that bite. Had to throw the rest away. I emailed the company and filed a complaint, so it will be interesting to see what they have to say. We conducted an interview tonight for the teaching position. The candidate had great qualifications, but I think her salary expectations were beyond our means. I definitely don't do this job for the money and sometimes I wonder if I am nuts because of that. We are still running the ad for a few more weeks, so we hope to get some more good applicants. I am currently reading Expecting Adam by Martha Beck. I just realized that I have seen her many times on The Oprah Show. She is such a witty writer and took a somber subject (Down's Syndrome) and turned the experience into a humorous and uplifting book. I am also reading Eats, Shoots, and Leaves by Lynne Truss. The forward alone(written by Frank McCourt)is worth the price of the book. I have been carrying that book in my purse and reading in the waiting room at all my doctor's appts. Tikanas - My gyn. doctor just left the practice at the end of June. I took the first available appointment with the other two docs and hoped for the best. I have decided that as long as the polyp isn't hurting me, it will just have to stay there until my schedule allows me to take time off. I still have hopes that I can get the surgery scheduled in August. My head is pounding and it is too late to take Excedrin (the caffeine keeps me up), which is the only OTC drug that touches my headaches. Would a glass of red wine be in order here?? Or does alcohol make a headache worse? Oh well, maybe I'll just tough it out and hope I can get to sleep despite the pounding. Goodnight, Marci

My JCs are own root, third year bushes, growing in zone 5/6 W. PA, with sporadic snow cover, which means snow cover cannot be relied upon to insulate against the winter. The first year no winter protection was provided. They died to the ground, but came back respectably. At the end of their second year of growth, 2015 season, they were bigger than they were after their first year. Good sign. Since they died back to the ground after their first winter, I decided to protect them last fall. A collar of heavy roofing paper filled with pine bark mulch was used. This past spring when the JCs were uncovered there was dieback until about 6 inches above the crown, unlike their total dieback their first winter. This year's growth is about equal to their growth last year, their second year. Does this mean the winter protection provided last winter was unnecessary even though some above ground growth was saved? One would think so, but if they had not been protected this past winter, they could have been killed, or cut back so far that they regressed in growth. There are so many variables as to how successfully a rose will survive winter that it is very difficult to predict what the outcome will be. I've had severe winters with minimal dieback and mild ones with severe dieback. I think the periodic warm spells during winter cause more winter kill than one would think. I intend to winterize the JCs again this winter. What have I got to loose? Any advantage a rose gets helps. I would advise you to give your Julia Child maximum protection. What's the harm? BTW If you have more than one Julia Child, are they then Julia Children?

In my case things turned out fine. Even sticky survived and Tequila Supreme is one of my favorite roses. I would not want to order anything right now in this weather. Be sure to call them to specify when you would like delivery. In my case I place an order in Dec. I think. Went to grab the mail one day in Feb. and there was a tiny box sitting in the snow. Yes, it was the roses a full two and a half months to early. I mean who on earth would send rose plants to Illinois in February!

I’m so sorry to hear this. I loved that movie and thought she was either courageous or foolhardy to try to cook every recipe in Mastering the Art of French Cooking! Considering that she accomplished what she set out to do, I suppose it was courageous!

I loved the book and the movie. I told DH this evening that I was looking for it on various streaming sites today, I wanted to watch it while I worked on a project, and he thhought I was looking for it because she had died. That’s how I found out! Such a shame.

It's sad when someone's life ends at such a young age. I feel sorry for her.

Having said that, I didn't much care for the book or the movie. The premise was imaginative but lame.

I thought it was a clever amusing movie. My daughter and I watched it together. It always reminds me of her and the fun we had with silly movies.

There's a season of a series of Julia with David Hyde Pierce and Sarah Lancashire. I didn't think I'd like it with DHP but he was actually pretty good. Sarah does a great job as Julia.

If the setting or circumstances of this tale are of interest, there's no better source for a deeper and more authentic dive than Julia Child's own account of her side, her autobiography "My Life In France". It's a wonderful book, I highly recommend it.
