How to trim out/finish off weird intersection at the top of stairs?

weedyacres
last year

I have a stair pro putting in new stairs to our newly finished attic area. There's a ledge along the stairwell that poses a conundrum at the top of the run.

My original plan was to cut out the lath and install a 1x on the horizontal part, and some more drywall on the neighboring joist). I hadn't realized the skirting would end up like this.

Suggestions on how to finish this out? The treads and risers are embedded in the skirting (routered out to fit snug), so they're part of the structure.
