Question for you: how do you feel about that floor tile in the laundry room? To me it goes a lot better in there now that the cabinet is a more neutral color. In your kitchen you have yellowy granite, yellowy/green floors, neutral tan backsplash and reddish cabinets so your colors are kind of fighting with each other right now. I have a feeling those cabinets are never going to look "right" with the granite unless the granite is a lot more reddish in person. Love your inspiration kitchen and think that look could definitely be achieved. If you're not ready to gut, painting the cabs is probably your best option. You could just sort of hide the floors with a couple of rugs until you're ready for the big redo. Or you could hide the floors with laminate floating floor as a temp fix...but would it start to look cruddy soon because of water?

Thank you all so very much for your comments and suggestions! Some thoughts: (1) We'd also *love* to move the rangetop to the wall. It's an external wall so venting would be easy. Unfortunately, that will pretty much mean gutting and re-doing *all* the cabinetry on the L walls. The rangetop is a Viking 36" and the upper cabinets on the facing wall are three 30" cabinets, so there's no easy way to add a hood without removing the entire bank :( As StanZ mentioned, messing with the cabinetry in the L will also trigger a domino effect with the other walls - since we won't be able to get matching cabinetry. We'd probably have to paint all the other cabinet walls and butlers pantry white, and then get contrasting new cabinetry for the L. Seems like a lot for moving the rangetop, though I'd much prefer it there as well. (2) An option would be to downgrade to a new 30" smaller cooktop and remove the middle 30" cabinet bank. Do folks believe that's a good idea? (3) Thank you all for your advice on saving money by keeping the cabinetry. We weren't sure if it looked too dated with everything in this sort of natural cherry tone. The floor is also sold oak with the standard swedish finish, and the window is stained the same color, so everything looks very medium yellow. (4) Since we're definitely redoing the island - we really hate the two level thing - we'll need new base cabinets there. Any suggestions on contrasting colors that might work? White? Dark stain? (5) We'll take everyone's advice and add pulls and remove the pendant lights! We're also going to replace the backsplash and granite with some lighter color. (6) I'll also try aprilneverends suggestion to find someone cut open the square uppers and put in glass panels (any suggestions on someone in the Seattle area?) One problem here is that the inside of the cabinet boxes are white, so we might have some issues with that. Perhaps obscure glass would help. Thank you all so much!

Not a pro. Really nice kitchen. Cabinets look well made ... that overhang atop the overhead cabinets would bug me though. I'd have wanted a flat top or, perhaps, a row of smaller cabinet doors above the doors below -- but made to look like a wall with square raised panels the same width as the decorative trim on the doors below -- and without any hardware so the storage is "hidden" storage for plastic storage containers that could be reached with a tool and/or for items used less often than most (seasonal) Would definitely paint all the kitchen cabinets one color -- likely a "winter white"; ... alternately, you could paint all the cabinets one color and paint the kitchen walls and all the walls seen from the kitchen -- living/dining -- a different shade of the same color. If you remove the backsplash behind the sink, yes, you could gain more countertop space if there is a granite bar a pro can affix to the current countertop by the sink with a smooth look, however, ... you lose the outlets that are there on the backsplash -- though the one on the left above the dishwasher might be movable to the left wall beside the dishwasher; and ... you might consider whether or not you want to keep that tiny bit of privacy for your dirty dishes, whether or not you keep any bar on the back side of that peninsula; and ... do you already have comfortable bar stools and do you actually use any bar there. Let us know how your project goes.

You really see don’t see a ton of grey in the countertop‘s picture. You could paint the cabinets cream instead of white to stay in the warm family Personally I don’t like glass tile as I find it busy and think it will be too much with the granite‘s pattern. Suggest staying with a solid backsplash and bring home a few to test, as it’s the best way to decIde. I’d suggest a cream similar to the cabinets, keeping colors and pattern to a minimum. Easier on the eye. The hardware, paint color, lighting and bar stools should only be decided on after cabinets are painted and backsplash is installed. There are many important decisions and you want to be happy with the results. I just repainted my cabinets and after 22 hours of work, hated them and decided to paint the lowers black, which I love but I’m lucky it turned out. Good luck
