Remodeling Porches & Decks Paint

60s ranch - curb appeal & porch

Our house was built in 1963. We’ve updated gradually inside and now need help with curb appeal.
We want to paint - thinking sherwin Williams black fox and shiitake. Should we paint door? What color?
Porch is a mess - thinking hardie plank lap siding (smooth). Fixing stoop using tile or some sort of stone. Other ideas welcome.

Thank you Dig Doug and Yardvaark! We typically plant impatiens in the window boxes and water daily a.m. and p.m. Not to take advantage of your skills but I would welcome ideas for improving the back side of the house too. I should have posted a better picture and can later today if you want. There is a large picture window to the right of the screen porch and a square brick patio to the left with a brick sidewalk along the garage wall to the driveway. Straight lines, nothing fancy. The large bush on the right side of screen porch is a Japanese lilac. I know it is large but it provides privacy which we like. Thanks again!

Congrats on your first home. I have a small house also. The entire front was covered with large bushes. Instead of a porch roof it had a metal awning that was falling off, and so on. No curb appeal at all. Over the years, and on a very limited budget I have tried to make it as "cute" as possible. This photo is "testing" the possibility of painting it from grey to a lilac-grey. I am normally against painting brick as most of it looks fine, even if one is not fond of a particular color. But brick that has wild and zany, high contrast color changes, is not appealing to me, in the way that I don't find blotchy skin attractive. Here, I'd paint the brick and open up an entire new source of design possibilities. (It would end up someone in the taupe range, though could lean toward tint.) I like the white trim, as it is cheerier looking than dark trim, which generally looks somber. For the pediment over the garage, I'd paint as trim ... white. See if you could change out the upper panel of the garage door for one with windows in it. For continuing with increasing curb appeal, expand the landing of the stoop (making it spacious) and re-do the front walk, which should be pulled at least 6' away from the house wall, if not farther. It should be at least 4' width and if you can upgrade its material, all the better. On top of that, you need NEW landscaping. The tree could stay but over time, work on lifting its canopy until it is above the height of the eaves. You probably need another tree at the right side of the yard, but that is not included in the shot, so we can't see that area.

Lose the shutters and focus on the landscaping. I'm not a fan of painting brick, but you might consider a tan that goes with the stone. You might consider a minor trim to the beech, be sure to get the opinion of a good arborist, beeches can be tricky and my guess is that's a magnificent tree. My copper beech changes color every season and is just fantastic.

Suggestion for type/color of tile/stone for porch and ideas for column would be great

I like the trim the color it is now. The downspouts shouldnt stand out the way they do. I would paint them, to match the brick, if they have to stay in that location. Usually, they are put on the corners, but, may be a reason, yours are where they are. If you want stone or tile on your porch, make sure its a color from the brick, and that you do them all a solid color, no variation. The white post in front, should be the same color as the trim is. I would also paint out the white by your door. It stands out too much, and not in a good way. Pick a color from your brick, to paint that, so it blends in. A nice bright color on the door, of your favorite color choice, to make the door stand out. It also looks like you have removed all the landscaping. That needs to be redone. I cant see what type of lighting you have under the porch, in your pictures, but, make sure it is well lit for guests.

Its a very handsome house. Re curb appeal, what strikes me is the vast amt of pavement, looks kinda like commercial space... but that just may be the angle of the camera. Ths is more of a question. How much space do you need really in that section of driveway which goes past your front entry. Can you bump out flower beds (currently full of gravel - good choice, given that you cant really grow anything in that narrow space) . And the entry walkway - even two or three feet would help, but for a decently sized border youd want at least 5-6 feet width to allow lush, generous growth of .... maybe decorative fountain grass interspersed with perennials / spring bulbs, would be simple, not too high, easy. I dunno, its a thought! I like the placement of the trees in front, but you may want to limb up (remove the lower branches) from the two in the center to maintain a little more visibility to the street. A new door light wood tone or color, midcentury, but with more vertical lines like this to repeat vertical-ness of the windows.
