how to lay 24x24 tile transitional bathroom?

I had asked the contractor to lay my porcelain tile in master bath brick pattern to make it more interesting and they did it wrong. They say they can re lay it. My style is transitional. What would be the best layout?

For that size tile I don't think there's anything wrong with the way they laid it. Since they're willing to change it I would look at the way the veining is running and maybe change some of the tiles so the veining makes more sense. I don't care for the two up against the shower where the veining is running in opposite directions.

It's not just the "levelness". It's the support under the floor that keeps it rigid. Any flex at all, and it will crack. It doesn't matter if it's smooth and totally level. It's all about your joists and subfloor. Your joists need to have the right spacing, the right depth, and not span too long of a length. Plus the subfloor needs to be the right thickness. A lot of time, this add considerable height to the installation in order to add rigidity. Your expert should be fully knowledgable about how to do the math to calculate whether or not your home can support such large tile without cracking. If he doesn't mention or understand how to calculate your existing space's deflection, then he doesn't know enough to do the job. Period. Move on to someone who does know how to figure this information out. Or, perhaps DIY it with the help of the pros at the John Bridge Forum.

Tile on the diagonal in that space will visually eliminate some of the excess linearity that you're now suffering from. Any time you have an excess of any type of linearity, you can bring things back into scale by changing the pattern. Same when things are too random. I had friends call me over, they bought a house that had a huge stone patio made from irregular flagstones. It was sort of visually disconcerting sitting on it. It was overwhelmingly non-linear, and the non-linearity of it was further emphasized by a contrasting grout color. A slight modification to the pattern really brought things into balance.

A powder-room floor isn't very likely to be wet (well, one hopes not anyway!) so slipping shouldn't be much of a worry. If you're concerned, you can choose tiles that have a higher "coefficient of friction." Coefficient of Friction is a measure of slipperyness and ranges (in theory) from 0 to 1. Zero would mean no friction at all while 1 would be mean you couldn't slide against the surface at all no matter how hard you tried. For comparison, rubber tires on dry road surfaces experience a COF of about 0.7 to 0.8 but when the roads are wet the COF drops to around 0.4. Wet ice can have a COF of 0.1 or even lower. For a shower floor, I would look for a tile with a wet COF of at least 0.6 or else use 1x1 or 2x2 mosaic tiles so that the COF of grout is more important than the COF of the tiles. Even with 1x1 mosaics though, if the tile is very slippery, you can wind up with a very slippery shower floor.

Two kids and life have gotten in the way of finishing. Quickly realized you can't stop tiling halfway thru - the morter/glue dries and now you have to scrape that away so the new section isn't higher. We are close, I think he can make perfect cuts to line up nicely to the doorway. However, he is a perfectionist and really is leaning to a doorway piece to cover (i'll fight it though). The other concern is the cuts are so close we can't get much grout in between wood piece. I think he's looking into grey kaulking to line the doorway to look like the grout ? (first mistake, the wonderboard under is too tall and we can't slide the tile under the hardwood door piece.) regarding the pics ** The tiles around the doorway are not in, just testing it all out. Where the tile isn't lining up well, those are not glued in, just laid there. Thanks for everyones continued interest!!!

I like straight set, like they laid it, but I agree that the veins look better running in the same direction.

The traditional stacked bond that they chose is the ONLY way that large of a tile should be set.

No need to rip up the tile. It looks fine as it is. As far as interest, your artwork can be the star.

IMO it is perfect just the way it is not sure why you think a brick pattern could be better BTW trying to make all the veins go in the same direction is not a good idea it will look contrived and honestly never be better .I am curious why the small tile in the shower withthe awesome tile on the floor.

No, what you have would look too busy if if were laid in an offset pattern. Keep it "as is". The veining is laid out to its best advantage now.

Thank you for the input. I am leaving it. Contractor seems to think veins should be random.
The shower was done first a few years ago, we are doing the rest of the bathroom now and actually the large square 24x24 tile is exactly the same porcelain tile as the small herringbone so they coordinate in color. I think a large tile on shower floor would be slippery? I like the grip that all the grout offers.
