It seems like you have had your first encounter with what is called an "eat in kitchen". At one time they were considered extremely desirable and the real estate listing would feature that.

Kitchen tables are actually very functional because it is way more comfortable to sit around the table versus on a stool at a counter - much more conducive to families eating together at breakfast or dinner as well.

Generally a kitchen tsble was made of durable materials that could withstand hard use without the need for protection. Dining tables are traditionally made of wood and need to be protected and were used for more formal meals

I can see them. Just click on the link. That's one unusual use of space. Looks like a complete redo with the knee wall separating the living room removed. A scale floorplan with dimensions, doors and windows would help.

Not very unusual. As I suspected it's just an eat in kitchen. A smallish kitchen table seating four would go under the lamp. Often there might be some kind of banquette seating under the window section.

As I posted having an "eat in kitchen" was considered very desirable. It predates the era of having an open plan where there is an island separating the "famiy room".

I actually like an eat in kitchen because I think sitting around a table is far more comfortable than dangling from a stool and also a table enables people to face each other instead of being lined up. Depending on how formal a familiy was they would eat everything but fancy meals in the kitchen although some upper crust families - typically with a SAHM or maybe even a maid - woud do dinner in the formal dining room. Much more difficult logistically because you physically had to bring dishes and table settings back and forth from the kitchen as opposed to be a few steps away from the kitchen table.

Definitely an eat-in kitchen area. Do you have any plans to renovate this space at all? That will determine the direction suggestions will take.

I’m a fan of the eat in kitchen. Even when we renovated our kitchen, we chose to keep a kitchen table rather than swapping for an island as it was great for the kids to do homework while I prepped dinner and as they grew and left, my husband and I were able to share meal at a table, rather than a counter, and not at our 8-foot DR table.
