Help with a cabin gable

last year

We’re in the process of a small renovation of a mountain cabin up in the snowy sierras. We’re an avid skiing family and want some ideas for the front of our garage. It’s looking really plain at the moment in particular the area above the garage door. Please note, the opening on the right will become the new front door. Thanks for your suggestions!

What about half-sawn logs -- in the style and stain of the main house -- applied as siding to the entire facade that is currently brown, and with the same dark trim as the main house applied around the garage door and new front door. The garage door and front door painted in the same gray as the porch rail.

Garage eaves should be the reddish brown, just follow the same color scheme for the garage as house. Correction: Half sawn logs to the entire FRONT facade of the garage.

Given your height limit, I don't think there is a better option than a gambrel roof so don't throw the baby out with the bath water. It is quite possible to shorten the "dormer" elements as shown in my sketch since that only removes a dozen square feet of floor space at the second floor of the house which is a small price to pay to keep your current design scheme. Filling in the hollowed-out" gambrel gables and using shingles, narrow rake trim and no corner boards will give the house the appearance of the Shingle Style which IMO will make this a spectacular house. There is an easier solution for the two roof slopes: make them the same. If you think that would change the appearance of the side elevations, please show us those drawings and also show us a section drawing through the house with the roof slopes well labeled (I can't read any of the notes or dimensions on the drawings). I don't want to offend you but to me the skill level of your designer is below what I would expect from an architect. I don't care who you use but if he/she is not architect please don't use that title.

we are re-doing the entire exterior of our home. do you have any suggestions what we could do regarding a design or something to update our large wide gable. We are doing LP siding and new new windows on entire house. Thanks for any advice.

I think you meant to say beams are horizontal. Gable brackets are meant to emulate Medieval heavy timber trusses so some kind of angled element would be typical (triangles being basic to the concept of a truss) and the trusses would have been used to support the roof inside as well The truss example above is a simpler more efficient heavy timber truss design. .

This would be much easier with plans, and materials, and colors. :) I'd choose the first one matching the other gables. And for the lurkers -- I like gables over garage doors to shed water and snow to the side, and would prefer not to see such a large front facing gable, so I might have tried for something like this.

I'd consider installing a pergola above the garage door to reduce the visual mass of the siding above it.

Sorry but I see no benefit to adding fake logs to this ever. I agree a new garage door and do a vent in the gable . Yes you could do a prgola but I ususlly only like thme with plant materila growing on them . What is it you gain from moving the door?

Unless it's a purely decorative vent, adding one in the gable of a home in the high Sierras is a great way to introduce blowing snow into the attic space.

Probably only decorative but really I lived in the rockies where blowing snow was a daily thing and not once did the snow enter the window in my over the garage bedroom . The overhang really did its job.
