At least where I am, Part 2 is Tuesday evening, Part 3 is Wednesday. Because of my family's history I'm quite familiar with a lot of what went on (my grandfather was an observer at the 1938 Evian Conference), and I'm very glad that Ken Burns is revealing these things to a wider audience.

Thank you for the post. I watched last night and plan on watching the next two. Bookwoman expressed my thoughts in a nut shell. It is so important for all of us to watch how atrocities like these can come about. I've never understood how the common man can be conditioned to turn a blind eye to such horrors, how one mentally ill man can steer a country and so many of its people into a hate filled cloud of acceptance. We, the children of survivors, still carry their pain and trauma.

Agree with all above. And I must add that even many Europeans, Australians, Americans….were survivors and their children and grandchildren are survivors. The damage and destruction were massive — my father was in harm’s way for years, relatives were wounded physically and emotionally in long lasting ways.

I too so often wondered how people could be so suckered into falling in line. And in more recent years we’ve seen narcissistic and corrupt psychopaths prevail in Europe, the Mid East, South America and closer.

Another PBS program that I recorded but have not yet watched is, ”Rise of the Bolsonaros— the rise to victory of Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro, a story of power, politics and family.”

I’m away from home but taping it. Deniers should watch.

Ken Burns has done our country a service with his documentaries. They are important records in a consumable format. Most people won’t read a 500 page book about jazz,baseball, etc. but they might watch a documentRy on tv.

Ken Burns was on Colbert tonight. I'm definitely going to watch this although I knew some of the history. Disgraceful behavior on America's part.

There have been far too many ugly and shocking episodes in recorded human history. Events and periods that, when examined, lead reasonable people to first shake their heads and wonder "how did this ever happen, how did people tolerate this?" The 20th Century had many such periods and incidents.

I watched the episodes on the PBS site. Burns' organization is, of course, extremely accomplished at finding and organizing archival information and presenting it in a way that flows. (I hesitate to say "entertaining way" for this topic). For this story, graphic photos and videos communicate in ways that words alone can't. Americans of my generation and later ones are poorly educated about American and world history. I believe it contributes to how we can be so consistently inept in our foreign policies and actions, again and again. The recounting of events as presented in this work shouldn't be news to anyone or something they didn't previously know about in some detail but for many, it will be a first time.

The US is not to blame for atrocities committed by Axis powers in Europe and equally in Asia during WW2 but the existing racism and antisemitism that dominated American attitudes through most of the century to that point in time caused inaction and poor decisions through to the end of the war. There's no better demonstration of this than the plight of the poor people onboard the MV St.Louis who were refused humanitarian refugee/asylum status by both the US and Canada.
