Can you take a couple of more pictures showing the whole room? It would good to see how the sofa/living area relates to the kitchen.

Where is TV? Have you considered making the wall big enough for your TV and wiring for it? We need to see all four walls and furniture to really be helpful here.

Also - the fridge will be stainless, not white as will all of the appliances. there will be a beautiful hood over the stove, too, new table and chairs, couches etc

You are right about not wanting the counter the same height as the sofa back, I had that situation in my RV and it was always a concern when I was preparing food. build it to 42”. you might even like an electrical outlet there on the kitchenside,above your counter.

I think I would try placing the TV on the wall where the couch is now, then float the couch in the room to face it. Here’s a helpful visual about proper distance and height for best viewing.

Thanks for the added pictures. I agree that the wall should be 42” so that you have a more “usable” wall space. Will the desk be staying in the living space? If so, would you be able to put the desk on the short kitchen wall so you can enjoy your fireplace and bring the TV down to a better viewing height beside the FP? Based on your room size & if the desk is staying, two arm chairs facing the FP & TV might be a better option? Not sure how many people are using the space…

also depends what's there on the kitchen side, which we can't tell -- if a stove, then definitely a higher wall, for example. a random counter, I'd want just enough wall to protect a sitter from anu spill...

@littlebug Zone 5 Missouri. I appreciate your honesty :) - I think my photos do not do it justice. It really looks so beautiful with the wall down. I'll be sure to post photos once the remodel is complete. I'm not sure if you can tell in the photos, but the kitchen is still missing countertops, crown molding, stainless appliances, stove hood, cabinet pulls, etc. The wall cutout is going to be framed out, too. It really opens the room.

If you post a floor plan with dimensions of the room you will get good comments about furniture layout in that room. I’d make the ledge (no stools obviously)….for all the reasons stated above. I do think the TV and sofa placement need thought

If you must have the sofa there, do raise the wall. Are you raising the ceiling to match the other half? That would make a huge difference.

Definitely need the TV on that wall and not up in the air unless someone is a chiropractor.

You won't like this but I agree with your husband. I'd keep it one level.

Provided the sofa is placed on the long wall and a lounge chair is placed in front of the half wall but far away as possible, I'd leave the counter at 36" high.

Whether you put the TV or put a chair on that wall, I would raise it so you can see the window, and see people in the kitchen, but hide the counters

Have you tried your couch in this position? I think the viewing angle would be much better than the high mount.

I’ve just realized that you have a desk in front of your fireplace. I assume that’s because you have no room for it elsewhere, but if I’m wrong and there is a place elsewhere, and if your couch works floating in the room, then I suggest a couple of these bean bag chairs in front of the fireplace. They have handles that make them easy to drag to the TV area when you need more seating there.

@ffpalms - yes, 4 bedroom all full of kids and no other place for desk. The remodel will include taking down the fireplace and moving my desk to my daughter's room who left for college......or leaving the desk on wall sans fireplace but replacing with a desk that matches new decor........this ugly brown desk was a quick grab from the storage at my off site office......Covid outbreak last year had me working from home. I LOVE THE beanbag idea so much!!!!!!

Natural division and interest can easily be added to an open floor plan by using wood slat room dividers - how much space you leave in between the slats controls how open the room remains.

I like your idea of putting a nicer looking work area in place of the fireplace. It would allow you to keep your daughter’s bedroom as a bedroom. It looks like you need a lot of space for monitors, and this long counter atop rolling cabinets looks attractive and very functional. With the right styling, it will not look out of place in your main living area.

Should you decide to leave your workspace in the main room, it will be important to hide all the electrical cords. I got this idea from closetworks.com It involves having a five inch overhang at the back of your desktop so that you can create a false wall.
