Who’s a duck dog now?
It’s Bella, Bella, Isabella!
She is now a dove dog, a sharp-tail grouse dog, and as of today, a duck dog!
Not bad for a seven-year-old that was neglected and never put through the exciting training as she should have been.
Let’s hear it for awakening genetics.
Look at her attitude. She’ll be a happy handful this evening.
She swam out about 70 yards to retrieve a blue-wing teal.

If you enlarge this photo you can see her determined eyes under her Groucho Marx eyebrows.
Sam stayed home and snoozed. His old bones restrict his outdoor excursions to slow walking in the fields.When Bella got back he knew exactly where she had been and what she had retrieved. He demanded to see the bird. :)

Comments (4)Thanks so much for your responses. I too have the fear of something happening to her if we released her. But I should extrapolate on the "wild" we'd be releasing her to. It's a large, beautiful pond at a local University, & the ducks that are already there are pretty much tame/domesticated ducks. Seasononally, a few wild ducks stop by, but for the most part it's the same group. There are always lots of people around, the ducks are fed corn in the winter & LOTS of bread by visitors all year long! Not a bad deal! :) I am just afraid we're being unfair to her by keeping her by herself in our yard, but I definitely understand the risks of releasing. Comments (157)Trying to comment I live in Alaska. Have had to take on flock that was being fed by woman who passed away this summer. First about 50 ducks now down to small group. Winter right now so guessing food is scarce. They eat the sunflower seeds that fell from bird feeder until I read about woman passing. Hoping they all survive but not trying to encourage to stay. Wildlife people say don't feed them but have over 2 feet of snow and other birds showing up. Hard not buy their food. Love to see them but they are spooked to see me at the window after this summer them stalking, staring at my house. School bus glad they don't stay all as they were stopping traffic this summer. Comments (4)Thank-you all for being so kind. It still hurts so bad. Topaz was one-in-a-million and there won't ever be another one like her. I only hope her little babies grow up to be as sweet as she was. It helps to have people to talk to about this, because I'm sure many of you have been through the same thing. Topaz's babies are over a month old now, but when they first hatched one only lived a few days and passed away. So, I belive Topaz is in Heaven (at the Rainbow Bridge) with her baby swimming around in a huge pond catching all the bugs and worms that she wants. Comments (3)Hi RoxtheFox. I think you're doing great with little whistle. Don't let the others get you down! I gernerally trust feed store owners for advice more than vets. Vets don't like it that the feed stores carry almost as many medications as the vets do, so I think the see them as a nasty little competitor. I alwas take my questions to my local feed store. Just doesn't sound like yours has a very good cage side manner! But I like the diet he gave you much better than the idiot vet. LOL one thing you might get him is a small kiddy wading pool. Ducks love to swim! But ducks are perfectly happy outside, and can stand quite cold temperatures. So unless you live at the nort or south pole, a good outing every day will make him a very happy duck! Now you have to remember that ducks bond very easily with ANYTHING. If you can't be with him 24/7 I would definitely get him a playmate or two. Maybe one of the opposite gender, and then raise a family of them if you have the space. As for the kind he is, I don't know. His colors will become more vibrant if he is a HE, and stay drabber if he is a she. Also, female ducks are the ones that really make a good quacking sound. Males (adult) sound like the can barely get out a whisper, and always sound as if they have a frog in their throats. Also when they are filly grown, a male will have a curly feather on top of his tail where the tail joins on to the butt. As for the dogs, dogs love to play and chew things. They may or may not intentionally try to hurt him, but may get too rough in play and hurt him accidently. Id make sure he has a safe place to be when you're not there to keep a watchful eye on them. Mostly, please remember that emotional bond is ver strong between a duck and his MOMM, or between mates. I had a pair once, and the female unexpectedly died. The male wouldn't eat, drink, sleep or anything. Within a week he grieved himself to death. There are many birds that are like this I say you're wonderful for rescuing him, and it sounds like you're doing a GREAT job of caring for him. Just give him a lot of love, and you'll have a great little friend. And the dogs can learn that he's part of the family and may actually protect him. But keep a close eye on that at first. Sam’s main afternoon activity. He was dreaming of the glory days when he was the second best duck dog of all time.Of course, Harry the Perfect was #1.
Besides impersonating a zeba, Sam got extra Milk Bone treats, ate half an apple with peanut butter, barked at squirrels, chased a yellow jacket withour getting stung, and shared cheese and crackers with me.
He loves his Big Barker bed. Bella has one in the den. I keep them covered with painters’ canvas drop cloths; they are easier to wash.

This is Frank who was supposed to be my little 13 pound house dog. He has decided otherwise and loves the great outdoors. He is constantly bringing his prizes to the front door.

woodrose, thank you! He is adorable, horse poop breath and all. Frank is a shih-tzu poodle cross and is not what I expected. I have had big dogs mostly for my entire life and was looking for a dog who would enjoy spending time indoors. He has proven to be a dirty little, muck loving dog. 💕
This is him the day we brought him home. Milla, my grand dog was not impressed.
And this is him freshly bathed but he doesn’t often look like that☹️

Caroline, Frank is five years old. I take him for a walk every day and he never seems to be bothered by the temperature. 30 degrees C. or minus 30 degrees C.
I’ve tried putting a little jacket on him but he is a little Houdini and can eventually get it off.
