Help with Oro Negro Tree

Can someone help diagnose why my oro negro’s leaves are no longer dark green? i have read its most likely an overwatering issue but wanted to try and verify. located in the florida keys and this tree is in a south facing bed and gets full sun all day.

Hey going2bbotanist, I would be curious myself to know how bibg this tree is as well. Also, like citrus boy said, check the moisture level down about3 3" or more to see how moist the ground is at that depth. I would also check the meter as you go down in the soil at 1", 2", even 4" if it goes that far. BTW, cheap moisture level meters can be had for under $10.00 easy and would be a good investement if you don't have one. YOu also may want to check for moisture at vatious points of the tree to make sure you are watering evenly. I would also suggest that you check at least every other day the moisture levels until the problem gets resolved (maybe even every day since you are in AZ). If you can snap a picture and post it on the fortum here as well that would be helpfull too. Just my 2 cents :) VTY -Mark

I would continue to water your poor tree, and 1/2 strength fertilizer. It appears (very, very early to tell for sure, yet), that the sprouting you see if from above the graft line, so it would be your tree starting to recover, miraculously. I would also very carefully remove the shipping stick. It serves no purpose, and is starting to girdle your tree. Patty S.

Hi Mike, Man I am kicking myself in the pants now. Last winter my Oro produced a bunch of grapefruits, which I knew would drop. I was left with 2 nice sized fruits, and right when they were turning from green to yellow, the dropped off. I assumed that they would not ripen more, so I peeled 1 of the fruits, and "attempted" to eat it. Attempted, because it was under ripe, bitter and sour. I will wait the next time my tree produces. My 'Star Ruby' fruits on the other hand, are turning yellow now. I did read in a book of mine that citrus farmers that live on or close to the equator end up with citrus that are green and not colored in the way we think they would. Very interesting. I remember the last 2 times I was in Florida, the oranges that I was told that were the best, were actually greenish yellow. I also had a few that were brought back from Puerto Rico, and they were also greenish orange. Hopefully I will have some 'Star Ruby' grapefruits to enjoy in a month or so. I will try to get some pics posted when there ripe. My 'Improved Meyer Lemon' tree will be at least another a few months. Maybe January or February? We will see. Andrew

I have an Oro Negro grafted tree in the ground since around 2015 and this is the first year I have fruit on it ….10-12 its Nov 11 2021 and they are 1/2 turned black the tree is very healthy and a photo is useless as I keep my mango and avocado trees sized to their space it may have taken all those years to produce from pushing the tree to grow by fertilization also my oruning may have prolonged the start of production yhe fruit is a 10 and worth any wait i bought a few fruit from Pine Island Nursery in Homestead and loved them then bought the tree i have 13 fantastic avocado varieties ON is in the top 5 not in any order Haas Carmen, Catalina, Monroe, Nishikaw, Miquel all of them took many years to fruit but well worth the wait

pix in bright blistering sun... sometimes arent the best ... can you try taking pix in the evening.. or in the morning.. because as of this pic alone.. it look fine to me ...

and as noted.. show us the whole plant.. from ground/pot up ... not a few select leaves ...

and.. since its still staked.. give us its history for the last 2 years ... recently planted .. repotted??.. how you water.. when you water.. how you decide it needs more.. etc ... a couple alle3gedly discolored leaves is not really enough to diagnose on ...

I planted it in Feb 2021. its in a raised bed with purchased soil. The bottom of the root ball is pretty much sitting ontop of native soil. I didn’t do anything with the roots - took it out of the pot and planted it. The first summer was rough on it- i was out of town for a couple of months and came home to it with no leaves due to me not watering enough. I started watering more and got it to grow new leaves. i have sense run drip lines throughout the bed and can water the equivalent of 1 inch of water per hour. I had the irrigation on a timer to come on for 20min twice per day - morning and afternoon all summer.

i have since switched things and I am watering daily for 30minutes. I do turn off the water when we get substantial rain. One of the biggest issues is i am gone for a couple of months in the summer - i have to set the irrigation and hope for the best. Maybe its doing ok and im worrying for nothing?? i have added some pics that i hope work - one is when it was planted and a couple from today. it has grown but the leaves are not dark green like they were when first planted. thank you for any help/advice you may have.

is that a banana behind.. its looks yellower than the tree you are worried about ...

i dont know your local FL soils.. but you might benefit by contacting your COUNTY extension office.. and asking them if the soil in general in your area is deficient is anything.. and might they recommend a remedy ..

in the alternative.. perhaps you can go all dr science on it. and buy a soil test at bigbox or some such ...

all i recall from my one visit to FL was.. its just sand everywhere.. and i wonder how much nitrogen is usually available.. and whether some of your plant need a fert of some kind ... i just dont kow.. some dont just go dumping fert all around.. use your local sources to find out ...
