DIY Wainscot project before&after
While I badly wanted to replace a tub and vanity and really re-do the very boring bathroom in our new house, budget wouldn't allow. So we decided to do a cheap DIY wainscot project instead. Thought I'd share.

(I'll actually be swapping out that shower curtain for one i have that is mostly black/white/gray)

Comments (22)As Enduring mentioned, I went with wainscoting in a paneled style because I wanted to mimic the paneling on my staircase downstairs and the door style and side paneling on the vanity I chose. It was very inexpensive and easy for my contractor to do. He basically used 1" x 4" pre-primed wood to make boxes and then trimmed the inner part with a 1.5" ovolo moulding with mitered edges. Comments (26)The paint color on the lower half of the wall is just a very light lavender. The upper half is more purple. I actually mixed the lavender myself, by adding a little of the purple paint to some white paint. The fake tile (sheet vinyl) floor came from Linoleum City in Los Angeles. I looked and looked and looked for that vinyl and Linoleum City is the only place that sells it. I called a salesman there and asked about it. He said they had a unique contract with Tarkett (I think) to produce this product and he didn't think it was sold anywhere else in the country. Their number one client is Hollywood. Set-building people buy it by the roll to use on the sets. The sheet vinyl creates the look of early 20 Century hex tile floor in a jiffy. :) The light fixtures and medicine chest are reproductions. The light fixtures came from Rejunvenation Hardware and the medicine chest came from Van Dykes Restoration hardware. All these years of writing about old houses and I finally got to use some of the resources I've been writing about. Thanks for all the nice comments. Comments (54)Wow, Kevin, your home is beautiful!!! Wondering if your house Is a trinity? Whatever, it's gorgeous. I met you in the bathroom forum. BTW, I live in central Jersey. I've called around to lots of stores and no one seems to have the.models of tubs I'm interested in. I did see the Edenton today however, so no need to post a close-up. But thank you anyone for the thought.. It is a nice tub. I was surprised how slippery the Edenton bottom is even with the texture (and I was looking for no texture at all!). I'm concerned since I need a tub/shower combo - but I really want a comfortable tub as part of that combo. Now I'm wondering if a bath mat will stick to the textured surface of the Edenton when I shower or will the texture prevent it from adhering to the bottom of the tub? Any insights, anyone?. You mentioned somewhere that if you had to do over, you'd choose the Hydrosystems Lacey. Can't seem to find one of those on display. Is the bottom of the Lacey textured like the Edenton or is it a smooth bottom? Where in Philly did you see the Lacey and other tubs you were considering? Thanks so much! last yearlast modified: last year@nuppal - sure. The height took me forever to figure out. Internet says rule of thumb is 1/3 height of ceiling, but for this room that put it at level with the top of the vanity. I used painters tape to get a feel for it, and it just seemed like it would look strange with that back piece of the vanity that goes up the wall a bit. The other common height per the internet seemed to be 1/2 up the wall, but that was too much for me.
So I just moved the painters tape around a bit until I thought it looked good in the room. We ended up putting the bottom of the chairrail 38" from the top of the baseboard. I thought it looked good in the room and with the vanity, and it gave us a very nice 30" height to the squares and 4" between both top and bottom. We also did a 4" space left and right between the square and to the edges, which decided the width of the squares.
I also decided not to put a square behind the toilet. We started in that direction, and I know that it is the norm, but once we had it there I just hated it. It looked to me like we were framing the toilet in a weird way. So I took that square off and we just painted behind the toilet.
The towel bar isn't something you'll likely want to copy, although to be honest I like how this one looks more than I thought I would. We're out of town most of the year and rent the house out while we are away. I had to go with a towel bar that could accomodate a lot of towels and a lot of abuse. After having to patch holes in the wall after even the best anchors were pulled about in another house I used to rent out, I went with a vertical towel bar that I could install purely into a stud (why on earth they don't do more 16" widths to things like towel bars I will never understand...).
This was my first shot at anything like this, and the other experts on here can very likely input how our project could have been tweaked to be better as you launch into your own!
